What we're about

This group is intended for anyone inspired by, interested in, and committed to the study of the life, legacy and cultural impact of J. R. R. Tolkien. Within a broadly informal, always polite and respectful, but familiar and friendly milieu, a typical meeting might involve the following:

a) Discussion of any aspect of the life, legacy and cultural impact of J. R. R. Tolkien from 'central' concerns such as his life, life circumstances, and works by him or edited by others from his notes through to more 'peripheral' concerns within a broader 'sci-fi and fantasy' context (e.g. touching on the work of other 'greats' of the genre e.g. David Eddings, Terry Prachett, J. K. Rowling)

b) Production of creative writing, artwork, essays etc on the topic of the life, legacy and cultural impact of J. R. R. Tolkien

c) Engagement with the wider Tolkien world primarily the Tolkien Society and its work

d) Discussion of other topics

e) Potentially, walks, meals out etc as the group takes on a shape

f) Other relevant activities as suggested

The typical group member will have an interest in and knowledge of the life, legacy and cultural impact of J. R. R. Tolkien, and will bring with them an open, interested mindset. Individuals who are new to the world of Tolkien are of course welcome.

Interests such as cosplay, LARPS and gaming are not at this stage areas of interest for this group which is primarily conversational, intellectual and creative in focus. Discussion of the above areas is very much in, however, and anyone who has engaged with Tolkien / sci-fi and fantasy through these media is most welcome.
