We live in a world where seeing is no longer believing. Deepfakes – hyper realistic digitally falsified video and audio - have been likened to disinformation on steroids. They have a disturbing array of malicious uses and pose a dangerous threat to society as a whole.

The distortion of reality and resultant truth decay has left us woefully unprepared. How do we detect and moderate manipulated media content in a world where social media has exponentially increased the volume and speed of information flow, facilitating the proliferation of false information? Are our existing legal and policy architectures fit for purpose? What can we do as individuals to help rebuild trust in a digital world?

Theo Priestley will give a sobering talk on the consequences of a world where you can't trust what you see or hear any more, and the line between fact and fiction, especially on the internet, has become increasingly blurred.

But the fakery doesn’t stop there. Many of us have or will fall prey to online sales of fake goods. In 2016, imports of counterfeit and pirated products into Europe amounted to circa EUR 121 billion.

Fake goods know no boundaries. Counterfeit versions of lifesaving prescription medicines are being sold online by criminals adept in the art of deception, often part of wider criminal networks.

Vicky Brock will share insights on the dangers of fakes, why it's not a victimless crime, and how her latest startup, Vistalworks, is aiming to help consumers stay safe when shopping online.
