Wildcat Canyon

This 7-mile loop takes us along Wildcat creek and up to San Pablo Ridge. We will have lunch at an old Nike missle site with great views of the bay and rolling hills. To get this view, we will climb 1200’ to 1700’ (estimates vary). Much of the trail is exposed, so a windbreaker and sunblock is recommended.

Getting there, from I-80 East (North) in Richmond:

• Take Amado/Solano exit, drive three blocks on Amador (parallel to the freeway)
• Right on McBryde Avenue, drive 0.3 miles
• Bear Right when road forks onto Park Ave, drive 0.2 miles
• Bear left at next fork onto Wildcat Canyon Parkway
• Park in Alvarado Staging Area, on the left

From I-80 West (South), take McBryde Avenue exit and head east, then follow directions above.

Here’s a link to park map: http://www.ebparks.org/Assets/_Nav_Categories/Parks/Maps/Wildcat+map.pdf.pdf

Planned Route: Wildcat Creek > Havey Canyon > Nimitz Way > San Pablo Ridge > Belgum

Both challenging and amusing ... kinda played "catch-up" while managed to find the parking area, waited for my dog to stop herding cattle ... and sat by someone who was offended by my scent. Grand hike, great vistas, and interesting women. Looking forward to the next one.

I very much enjoyed my first hike with this group. I'm on the shy side, and came alone, and found these women in general so very warm and welcoming.... I thoroughly enjoyed each opportunity to meet and talk with my fellow hikers. I look forward to our next event!

I made it off the wait list and get to go on the hike. Yeah! Now I am looking for a ride for me and my service dog, Kyleigh. I can meet you somewhere along the way, like the Sea Breeze Cafe just off the Freeway at the foot of University, or my house is just 9 blocks off the Freeway - up Buchanan St. in Albany. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks! Kerstin & Kyleigh

Hi Kerstin I could be at your place a bit before 9:30 to pick you and the dog up. I sent you email so we can correspond directly on the address and phone and such.

Much to my dismay, I will not be joining the group on what promises to be a lovely hike tomorrow. Duty calls to help a friend in her move. Hope to meet up with y'all soon!

Looks like this is a popular destination; we'll have to schedule more hikes in the East Bay (email me with suggestions). If you aren't going to make it Saturday, please change your RSVP to "No" as a curtesy to hikers on the wait list. Thanks.

Delaney, I would love to get a ride, too. do you have a back seat for me and my service dog, Kyleigh? Thanks, Kerstin

I'm sorry Kerstin it isn't going to work out to have your dog in the backseat - I may bring Raven and she doesn't like other dogs back there.

I bashed my knee last week. I think I'll have a hard time on the hills right now. Love to do the next one. Have a great time.

Are dogs welcomed on this hike?

    November 15, 2013

    • Deborah

Yes, we finally have a dog-friendly hike. :) Watch out if you have a small dog; my dog and I encountered an assertive coyote the last time we were here.

That is a nice route in Wildcat, some climbing but definitely worth it for the views!
