Coffee, Tea, and Conversation

  • Jun 14, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This will be our regular meeting, and if the past several are any indication, we are going to have another lively round of good open discussions and making some new friends.

We begin the group with a round of introductions where everyone takes 3-4 minutes to tell a little about themselves, and to address the topic of the day.  Once we've gone around the group, we shift gears, and open the floor for discussion.  This allows for a lot of good conversation, and everyone is free to participate as little or as much as they'd like.

As always, please show up a little early to get a cup of coffee (which Mary makes) so we can start on time.  Please bring a breakfast item if you'd like.  We supply plates and utensils.

Also, to help defray the expenses of Meetup, we are asking for a nominal donation of $2.00.

We look forward to seeing you!

Our June 14 meeting will be a regular discussion group, and I have sent out an email explaining this. Thank you all for your thoughts!

Diane, I agree after seeing the CBS interview. I emailed him and asked him specifically about those issues and suggested that if those were his views, he might be wasting his and our time by visiting. I'll let you all know what I hear back. I did not know he had those positions.

Hi, glad to be back in town, looking forward to seeing everyone soon! I just saw a small interview with the Dr. on local CBS news this morning. He stated he is pro gay rights, abortion and most social issues. His passion seems to be healthcare where he wants to get rid of the affordable care act but wants to replace it with a medicare for all concept. He is conservative on fiscal issues reducing the corp tax and he is pro fraking.
I think it would be a good idea to have a detailed bio on future speakers.
    See you all soon.

I have no problem listening to candidates speak. His presence would have no reflection on our group. The name of our group makes it very clear where we stand. A tea party plant would not make any sense. If by some far out chance he obtained the office, I might like a connection for possible cooperation on a compromise. You never know. Hold your enemies close.

I have received several emails from members about the decision to have this candidate speak. A few even suggested he is a Tea Party plant. We are all entitled to our opinions. In my opinion and based on what he says in the pamphlet (the video is silly and gives no clue about his platform), this candidate is far to the right of our progressive ideas. To address his first point, to say he will replace Obamacare is what the Republicans have been saying forever. If he wants to replace it with government-run healthcare, then that's a good thing, and I would ask him. But I doubt that's the case since he does not state it. Next, to address the national debt by reforming Social Security and Medicare smacks of Paul Ryan and the Tea Party, and I would really challenge him about this. His third and final point about creating jobs sounds good, so I would ask him more specifics about that. Yes, we are open-minded enough to listen to him, but progressive enough to challenge him.

I couldn't tell from the video what he stands for. But if he wants to speak that is ok as long as he doesn't take up too much time.

I think you are being a little too quick to judge Susan. I don't know him very well at all, but I think it's great that someone of his background is willing to take a shot at fixing Congress. This is an open-minded progressive group, yes? It appears some people like his ad.

I don't mean to offend Kerry, but I just watched his video and was appalled. It was so unprofessional and inappropriate. Very right-wing and, well, frankly quite stupid. I hope he realizes what type of people he will be meeting on the 14th. If his video reflects his character, his run for office will be short-lived, which in my opinion is a good thing.

At Kerry's request, an Independent candidate, Steve Shogun, will speak at the very beginning of this meeting. This is by no means an endorsement!!! In fact, from what I can tell, he appears to be to the right of progressive/liberal viewpoints. I have posted his video under Discussions and his pamphlet under More, then Files.
