2:10 p.m – 3:40 pm.: A Journey of 10,000 Miles: Translating Environmental Nonfiction

Translating environmental nonfiction is like opening a Pandora’s box. Translators face jargon from a wide range of disciplines, from hydrology and biology to genetics and politics. On top of that, this genre makes extensive use of literary and emotional language. This session will explore the various scientific and poetic challenges encountered by translators in this niche, offer tools of the trade, and brainstorm solutions. The presenter will zoom in on the epic migration of shorebirds and the impact humans exert on their habitats, taking the audience on a 10,000-mile journey as these birds travel the Earth in pursuit of summer.

About the speaker:

Ana Salotti is an English-Spanish translator specialized in audiovisual and natural sciences translation. She has been a professional translator since 2006, and holds a MA in Translation Studies. In environmental sciences, she has translated for intergovernmental organizations dealing with the conservation of seabirds, fish and marine mammals around the world. She has translated an environmental nonfiction book on migratory shorebirds and our impact on the ocean, Deborah Cramer’s The Narrow Edge, to be published in Spanish in 2018.
