Our next meeting of the bilingual Spanish-English bookclub “Entre dos mundos” will be on Saturday, July 27 from 3 pm to 5 pm. We will be commenting Gabriel García Márquez's Cien años de soledad, either in its original Spanish version or in its English version One Hundred Years of Solitude translated by Gregory Rabassa. Or both!
This is the fun thing about this book club! It’s totally up to you: you can choose to read the book either in Spanish or in its English translation, or in both! During the meeting, we will have bilingual discussions on different aspects of the book, including topics that are interesting to translators, such as the linguistic, stylistic and cultural choices made in translation.
This month's book choice is totally different to what we've been doing. We've been discussing books originally published in Spanish up to eight or nine years ago and translated into English. But because we've heard Netflix is releasing an original series based on Gabriel García Márquez's Cien años de soledad produced by Gabo's sons (https://cnnespanol.cnn.com/2019/03/06/cien-anos-de-soledad-de-gabriel-garcia-marquez-llegara-a-netflix-como-una-serie-original/), we thought it might be fun to (re)read this Latin American lit classic.
Hope you're as excited about this book as we are!
