Shortoff Mountain and Linville River hike and nonnative invasive plant removal

  • Aug 31, 2014 · 8:30 AM

Shortoff Mountain is a beautiful hike full of views up and down the gorge, as well as of Lake James.  From the Wolf Pit road trail access, we'll hike up to where the MST intersects, and then down the MST to the river.    Halfway down to the river, there is an area with several Princess Trees and Chinese Silvergrass which are both highly invasive.  We'll cut these trees with hand saws and dig the clumps of grass to stop their spreading along this trail, and then hike down to the Linville River for lunch and enjoying of the water.  Afterwards, we will hike out along a different access  trail that will allow us a car shuttle and to stay in the shade while avoiding the long up hill hike back. This is a moderately strenuous 7 mile hike.  Please wear sturdy hiking boots, and be prepared with at least 2 liters of water, plenty of food for yourself, and for possible rain.  Bring your swimsuit if you want, and Wild South will provide tools for the work.

Shoot! Have hardly been in the woods all summer and this weekend is a birthday camping trip at South Mt with the offspring. IF that gets cut short or falls through, I'll get in touch.
