I was asked by the Make a Wish CT Trailblaze Challenge coordinators to put the word out for sweeps for their 2019 Trailblaze Challenge. I participated as a hiker last year and it was a great experience. Essentially we would show up Friday night for dinner and a hotel stay (along with a meeting to learn our jobs for the next day). Then we head to Bear Mountain early Saturday morning and assist the participants as needed. See the job description from Make a Wish below:
Hike Sweepers will be placed either in the middle or back of the pack to track hikers, ensure hikers are following the correct route and also to alert the aide station volunteers to any issues/emergencies on the trail. Depending on placement you may also be asked to remove trail markers (clothespins and/or yard signs) as you pass through. Hike Sweepers should be prepared to hike between 10-15 miles on Saturday (one leg on, one leg off). Alternatively, sweepers can also opt to hike the entire 26.2 mile route
I did not find the terrain to be difficult. But it was a fun long day out in the woods. All of your food and your hotel stay would be covered by Make a Wish and you can opt for a shorter day with fewer miles or sweep the full course.
Let me know if you have questions!
