Mt. San Jacinto Peak via Palm Springs Tram

Come support those doing Cactus to Clouds (C2C) by joining us on the second half of this hike from the tram to San Jacinto Peak.  Lori will lead this group up from the tram to the peak.  Plan to meet at the bottom of the Palm Springs tram at 9a..  Get there early enough to purchase your tram tickets.  Then head up on the tram approximately at 9:30a..

It's going to be a long tiring day for the C2C group.  So we can use your support to encourage us up the second half of this big hike.  Afterwards, celebrate with us by having a cold beer at the tram bar and cafeteria area......WOO, HOO!

This all day outing is as good as it gets. The trip starts out by taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway almost a mile straight up into the San Jacinto wilderness. The first 2 miles of trail traverses a lovely pine forest, passing through Round Valley. The trail then begins a 1 mile accent to Wellman Divide, a great spot for lunch with breathtaking views. At this point the trail heads north towards the peak. The forest is somewhat open with the ground covered in lush vegetation, and ever more stunning views of the desert below. Near the summit you will encounter a small stone cabin, and after an easy rock scramble up a 100 yards or so, you will be at the peak.  Come join us during this hike through the beautiful San Jacinto wilderness.

Distance: 12 miles round trip

Summit: 10,834'

Elevation Gain: 2,300'

Difficulty: Strenuous due to altitude and hike distance. (Warning: if you tend to get altitude sickness at high elevation, please do not come on this hike.  This is for your safety and the others around you.)

Hiking time: 7-8.5 hours depending on pace, includes time for lunch.

Pace: Moderate speed

Meeting location and time: Meet at the listed address (elevation 2,643 ft) above at 9:00a, purchase our tram ticket for the tram departure up to the top of the aerial tramway (elevation 8,516 ft).  From there, we'll obtain our permit at the Ranger Station and off we go on our hike to the top of Mt. San Jacinto (elevation 10,834 ft).

Tickets for the Tram: You will need to purchase a Tram ticket for this hike. Cost is $24 for Adults. AAA Auto Club offers a discount of 10%.  They do have tickets available the day of.  But why take the chance.  I recommend purchasing online before the day of the event. Remember, the tram departure we want to take is 9:30a., http://pstramway.com.

What to bring: 3-liters of liquid, Snacks, Lunch, light jacket, gloves, beenie, sun protection (sunscreen/hat), lighting, hiking poles (recommended), and a fun attitude to share in the altitude = ).

If you bring a guest you must stay with them and are responsible for their safety

Robert, Your posts above say to get on the tram at 8:00 am and 9:30 am. Do you have a favorite? NEW PARAGRAPH: I looked at the online ticket web site. There are no tickets available for 8:00 am. But there tickets available at 9:00 am. No half hour tickets available online even though the tram leaves every half hour. With all the known hikers on Saturday it seems like we should buy online if we can. If we leave Redlands at 7:30 am we should be there by 8:30 am easy. I could do a group buy if we like 9:00 am.

Hey Tom, we amazingly had the timing for both groups to meet at 10a work out yesterday. Not bad compared to Nine peaks being late by an hour and a half. Thxs Tom for being up there for us during Nine peaks (Shuttling too!) and yesterday on C2C. Your support and cookies are much appreciated =). Thxs for being such a cool guy!

You're the cool guy, Mr. Assistant Organizer. Without you, none of this fun would have happened. Namaste.

I uploaded a professional quality pic of the C2C support team. Five SoCal sherpas were required to carry enough CC cookies for the C2C expedition to make it to the summit and back.

Thanks for not mentioning how I had to reach in front of you and Lora to get the big 50th prize. But I was thinking "Maybe its a new car; worst case, a new camera".

Wow, the C2C support group! It was so great to see you guys at the top of Skyline! It was icing on the cake to munch on the chocolate chip cookies. Thank you Tom and Lori for the cookies. I appreciated everyone's support yesterday and all the extra food you brought to keep us energized. Thanks Joanna, Lora, and Lori for all the great pics. Also, thank you Lori for waiting and bouldering along side me up the last part to the top! That was awesome you were there for me! Thanks again! Tom, Charles and Liz thanks for being there too. Your encouragement helped us that second half. Tom and Charles, I haven't seen your RSVP yet for Nov 2nd's C2C =). Overall, it was a good time with you guys from the time we saw you at the top of Skyline to the Bar tram area. Thanks for all your help and I hope you all enjoyed the scenery and beauty of the area. I always love hiking in this area. Well, have a great start to your week and thank you again for making this a wonderful group.

Thanks for the wonderful pics and the running back and forth between the front of the pack to the rear to get the pics. Looking at all your posted pics, I realized you got more of a workout than the C2C folks =). Thanks again!

The eve of the big hike guys! I'm excited and joyful we will be able to put all our training to work. I just want to thank you Julie and Chris for embarking on this journey to prepare for C2C which started way back in April. Also, thanks to those who joined us during the other hikes leading up to tomorrow. I wish you Andy, Lisa, Kevin, Pam, Kay, Robert Eric, Giesla, Annette, Monja, Jess, Nicky, Angela, Bruce, and Henny could join us. But I know all your spirits will be with us during C2C. And for those others who were along for the ride and plan to join us at the tram up to the peak, Lori, Tom, Charles, I look forward to see your smiling faces once we crest Skyline. Thanks for your willingness to come out and lend support. Your kindness is well appreciated! Well, it's 5:40p now. Have to go to bed for a midnight wake up call =(. See everyone tomorrow and thanks again for making this meetup such a wonderful group....Robert

Well, it looks like we'll be in good company. Of what I'm aware of, there will be four meetup groups out on the trail this Saturday. Of the four groups, I counted a 136 people on the trail: 73 doing C2C from Palm Springs desert floor and 72 starting from the Tram at top. Of those beginning at the Tram, 63 of them will begin an hour ahead of our Tram group. Therefore, the trail should be well defined/traveled (possibility of residual snow) by the time our group begins our ascent to the peak.....WOO, HOO! Are you guys excited =)?

It's all good. There will probably be less boy scouts on the trail than in the spring, so it evens out. Stop counting and get back to work!

Here's a link to the tram cam located in Long Valley down from the top of the tram: http://pstramway.com/long-valley-cam.html

No snow in that area but doesn't speak for the higher elevations. You can also see people walking around up the cam area. Why are they not at work....LOL!

bring your hiking poles and microspikes if you have them. if you don't have them, that's ok. just stay behind the leaders just in case there is snow we need to clear through. if there is snow, be ready for a snowball fight =).

I did the pk this past Saturday. Took the Willow Ck trail...about 0.5 mi further, but the trail is easier and in MUCH better condition than the regular trail. It did go by the fire area which is impressive to see.
The flood results are obvious everywhere!
Looking forward to seeing ya'll again.
