RESCHEDULED---Mt. San Gorgonio Nine Peaks Challenge

  • Mill Creek Ranger Station

34701 Mill Creek Rd, Mentone, CA (map)

    34.098507 -116.978035

  • Warning: ADVANCE HIKERS ONLY. To officially be on the Attendee list, you must first answer the question after you have RSVPd.  I will need to get an idea of your recent hiking experience before moving you off the Waiting list.  Also, this hike will be limited to eight people.  Please be in hiking shape for this activity. If you cannot handle major elevation gains and altitude, please do not RSVP for this activity. This is considered a strenuous hike.

    As written in Trails.com:

The great San Bernardino Divide forms the backbone of San Gorgonio Wilderness and is the highest ridge in California south of the Sierra Nevada. The west end is anchored by San Bernardino Peak, while the east end culminates above treeline on the towering summit of San Gorgonio Mtn. A well-built trail, constructed by the Forest Service in 1938, runs the length of the gently undulating crest, passing seven other minor peaks along the way. A worthwhile challenge is to climb all nine of these summits; the undertaking has become so popular that the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association sells an “I Climbed the Nine Peaks” arm patch to commemorate the deed. Boy Scout troops do the hike as a 3-day backpacking trip. Experienced mountaineers can do it in one long day. This trip is recommended for those who already know the area well because it usually involves some hiking before dawn and/or after dark. Good navigation skills are required to locate the minor peaks on the ridge. Although this is a very strenuous route, it is easier than the other Nine Peaks challenges around Mt. Baldy and the Desert Divide.

Come join us as we go on a wild adventure bagging the nine peaks along the San Bernardino Peak and San Gorgonio mountain ridge.  These will be the peaks we will attempt to ascend starting from Vivian Creek:

    San Gorgonio Mt. 11,502'
    Jepson Peak 11,205'
    Little Charlton Peak 10,696'
    Charlton Peak 10,806'
    Alto Diablo 10,563'
    Shields Peak 10,701'
    Anderson Peak 10,864'
    San Bernadino Peak East 10,691'
    San Bernadino Peak 10,649'

    Total distance: ~26 miles

    Elevation gain: 8000 ft

Time: This will be a day hike.  Plan to be out between 14-16 hours.  The group will move at a moderate pace and will not spend a long period of time at each peak.

Meeting location: Those who want to carpool from the Millcreek Ranger station, let's meet at 3:15a..  All others, meet at the San Bernardino peak trailhead at 3:45a..

What to bring: The 10 essentials, at least 4-liters of water, snacks to nibble on on the way up and down, Sun Protection (sun screen, hat), Hiking poles (highly recommended) Wind breaker, head lamp, Lunch, Adventure Pass and a positive attitude.

You can also refer to the following link regarding the 10 essentials to have when hiking:

Also, what you bring from this list of essentials will depend on the individual's preferences, knowledge, experience, climate and locations may/will require substitutions.

    Hey everyone,

I'm going to reschedule the Nine Peaks challenge to October 18th to allow more training time. I will replace this hike with the Baldy double. I hope you can still make both activities. Robert
