CANCELLED-Exploratory hike-Hiking the Ladders in Painted Canyon, Mecca(Part 2)

  • Mar 1, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Okay, the last time we were here, we discovered some new routes with ladders.  As a result, we had folks interested in exploring this area.  Therefore, this hike will vary in mileage because of the exploratory nature.    So be in hiking shape.  I am guessing it will take approximately 3-4 hours.  If you are up for the adventure, RSVP.  This is one of the most popular, beautiful, enjoyable and picturesque hikes of the desert.  I have done this hike many times and it is always fun!

Details of the Hike: This hike will vary in mileage because of exploratory nature.  So be in hiking shape.  It will take approximately 3-4 hours.  There is some elevation gain but not a significant amount.  The hike will takes us on some rock scrambling where we will eventually climb a series of ladders, each time getting to the next level.  As you hike and climb you will travel through some beautiful canyon walls.  At times the canyon trails and ladders are in narrow, tight places but the ladders are well maintained and very secure. If you are afraid of heights, tight or narrow spaces this hike might not be for you. The trail eventually leads up to the top of the mesa which looks out over the valley and gives us beautiful views all the way to the Salton Sea.  We will take a rest at the top of the mesa so bring plenty of snacks and water.  It is important to drink plenty of water while hiking so you stay hydrated. The trip back will take us hiking back through the sandy wash where you will be able to view beautiful rock formations along the way.  The hike does require sturdy hiking shoes with traction to keep you from slipping on the rocks and the ladders.  Hiking shoes also help when walking through the washes.

Direction:

If you are sensitive about getting your car dirty, you may want to carpool.  Painted Canyon road is a dirt road you'll drive on for 4 miles.

• Take I-10 E past Palm Springs.

• Slight right at California 86S S (signs for Brawley/El Centro/86S Expy) 12.1 miles.

Due to the rain storm moving through the area, Saturday's Ladders hike is canceled. I will rescheduled this activity for a different date in the future. So please update your RSVP status accordingly and sorry for the inconvenience.

Looks like a chance of showers in the Mecca area Friday and Saturday. Definitely high percentage of rain in the Inland Empire area. I will update everyone Thursday evening on the situation. If the weather is fine in Mecca Saturday but has rained a day or two in the area prior to us getting there, I caution you driving your car on the 4.5-mile dirt road. I have heard of folks requiring a tow as a result of getting stuck in the mud. Experienced drivers with 4x4 vehicles should be fine. Stay tuned.....
