Hiking and Lunch in Palos Verdes

Location image of event venue

Details

We will start at Del Cerro Park at the end of Crenshaw Bl. in Palos Verdes

Hike level: This is considered a moderate level hike, 1100 feet elevation gain and loss, 6 miles roundtrip
This is mostly mostly fireroads and trails till we get to the bottom where we will walk along the street a bit (Palos Verdes Drive) and then do the final descent to get to the water level with rock caves. There are lots of photo opps here, so we will stop (and rest) and explore about 15-20 minutes before we head back up.

approximately 3 hours hike time

This is an upside down hike which means you hike mostly downhill first and climb up to get back to the cars. It may seem easy on the way down, but once we start climbing back up, you will get a good workout. And you have no choice to get that workout. Your car is on top and you are not going home til you get to the top. We will go at a slow to medium pace to conserve energy for the hike up (you will thank me later for this!)

In consideration of others, please no one that has never "hiked" before. However if you are in good physical shape, but have not hiked before, then you are welcome to take the gamble and join us. My trainer says a good rule of thumb: ability to run or walk briskly (3.5 mile/hour walk pace) on the treadmill or ride the stationary bike at the gym for more than 30 minutes without get winded.

Please bring sufficient water and snacks for the hike.
Pack your own lunch. We will picnic on the grassy area in the park when we return.
There is no need to bring your lunch on the hike because we will have an opportunity to go back to our cars.
Extra blankets or towels to put down on the grass to share with others would be great.

Rain cancels.

Dress appropriately. Since we wont be sure of the weather, its best to dress in layers to be properly prepared. The right shoes are IMPORTANT! I learned the hard way the first time. Hat and/or sunblock also highly suggested.

Directions: From Crenshaw and PCH, continue south til it ends at Del Cerro Park. It's further than you think, please allow 15 minutes from PCH and Crenshaw.

We will depart at 1045 am for the hike. We expect to be back around 130-2pm. Lunch will be around an hour, or until whenever you want to leave.

This is a cross posting with the Santa Monica Hiking group

I am NOT a experienced hiker. I have done this hike several times, so I will be simply be guiding the way.
Please use your best judgment for anything I havent mentioned...and know that you are participating on this hike at your own risk.
