Coursera/UPenn: Modern & Contemporary American Poetry

Turning this into our repeating meeting... every Saturday at 1 pm for 11 Saturdays.

This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about contemporary American Poetry: free online Coursera course chaired by UPenn. If you want to attend the course, please sign up here at the Coursera webpage.

If you are interested in meeting face-to-face in Raleigh or Durham to exchange and discuss the course material, please RSVP to this meetup. In your RSVP please indicate the evenings or weeekend days that work best for you. I will try to pick the best day.

Looking forward to learning more about poetry and chatting with you about it!!

A last minute glitch has come up, so won't be able to make it this afternoon.

    Hi all,
Something's come up and I won't be able to make it tomorrow. Am sorry. Hope to make it next week.

Has anyone gotten into the site to view the schedule? I'm unable to. I can get to view course information but that just takes me back to the main page.

I signed up, and I would like to participate in a discussion group in Durham or Chapel Hill. I can be available most days or evenings with some specific limitations.

Where does one go to hear/read at a poetry reading/open mic??? I'm new here and do not know. I lived in NYC and was used to something going on every night.

It's hard to know what nights will be best in the fall.

Hi Angelika, I just signed up for the course - always wanted to take a poetry class in college but never got the chance. Evenings or weekends would work for me.

HI Angelika and all, Thanks for pointing this out. What a terrific opportunity.I've just signed up. I would be interested in meeting during the day so I guess that would be on a weekend day in Raleigh. Saturday is prob ably best. Although not sure if I could make every week. Best time around 1pm probably.

Hi Angelika! Trying to get back in the water. This seems like a good way. Hope I don't drown.... I look forward to seeing you again, on a regular basis!

Thanks for pointing this out and setting it up, Angelika. In your e-mail, you mentioned John Ashbery. So funny ~ I'd never really heard of him but just last weekend ran (walked) across a stunning poem of his on a bridge in Minneapolis. :

And now I cannot remember how I would

have had it. It is not a conduit (confluence?) but a place.

The place, of movement and an order.

    The place of old order.

But the tail end of the movement is new.

Driving us to say what we are thinking.

It is so much like a beach after all, where you stand

and think of going no further.

And it is good when you get to no further.

It is like a reason that picks you up and

places you where you always wanted to be.

This far, it is fair to be crossing, to have crossed.

Then there is no promise in the other.

Here it is. Steel and air, a mottled presence,

    small panacea

    and lucky for us.

And then it got very cool.
