FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I'M NERVOUS PLAYING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, IS THIS GROUP FOR ME?
Yes. The main purpose of the group is to provide a safe place to get performance experience and learn how to handle nerves.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT AND HOW LONG CAN I PLAY?
We go round the group each playing a piece in turn. Usually there’s time to go round at least twice, often three times, occasionally more. If you've played a longer piece than everybody else, please volunteer to sit a round out so everyone gets the same amount of performance time.
HOW DOES THE WAITLIST WORK?
If a place becomes available it is automatically allocated in the order you joined the waitlist. Most events have a few dropouts so the sooner you get on the waitlist the better your chance of getting a place.
Cancellations can happen right up to the start of an event so please check regularly. If you're still on the waitlist and it gets too late for you to commit, take yourself off the waitlist to give the next person the chance.
I'M ON THE WAITLIST, SHOULD I JUST TURN UP ANYWAY?
Please don't. Unless you have a confirmed place please do not show up as it can cause security problems.
WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL?
Change your status as soon as you know you're not coming. This applies even if you are on the waitlist, and right up to the start of the event.
IS IT INCREDIBLY RUDE IF I 'NO SHOW'?
Yes. You keep the rest of us waiting around for you and take up a place someone else could have had. Because it's so unfair on everybody else, failing to show up could result in you being barred from the group.
WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF PLAYING ABILITY IN THE GROUP?
Generally we're talking about grades 2-8 level.
WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC IS PLAYED?
We welcome all styles of music, but we ask that you’ve prepared something with performance in mind - actual ‘pieces’ that an audience can enjoy, not just sight-reading or jamming.
WILL THERE BE ANY COACHING OR ADVICE?
No. Other than expressions of encouragement, we specifically ask everyone to keep their opinions of other's playing to themselves.
CAN I JUST WATCH?
No. We are 'Players Only', which is what creates the supportive 'all in it together' atmosphere that's the essential element of our group.
CAN I BRING A FRIEND?
No. For the same reasons as above.
CAN MY CHILD/STUDENT COME?
No. Attendees must be 18 or over.
I'M AN ACCOMPLISHED PIANIST - CAN I STILL COME?
If you can genuinely call what you want to do at one of our sessions a 'learning' exercise then you are welcome, but... There are plenty of performance opportunities for skilled players and very few for those of us not so far along the road to pianism. Our groups are kept deliberately small and that means we're nearly always oversubscribed. If all you want to do it show off your skills please don't take up one of our limited number of spaces.
CAN I PARK NEARBY?
Probably not. If you decide to drive, please leave yourself plenty of time to find a place.
