Authentic Movement is an expressive and mindful improvisational movement practice between a mover and a witness which encourages the development of consciousness (American Dance Therapy Association, 2015) and is useful for personal exploration, self-discovery and increased insight into self. At times, it can simply be a space to 'be' in.
In Authentic Movement, one (the mover) begins with eyes closed, allowing oneself to be moved by their inner world of sensations, images/imagination, environmental source and/or feelings. The witness (the one observing the mover, usually sitting) does not move and remains with eyes open. Her/his role, while keeping eyes open and attention on the mover to keep them safe in the space, is to pay attention to and quietly contain his or her own judgments, feelings, sensations, and impulses to move, bringing conscious attention to the mover. A transition time may then ensue whereby drawing, writing or contemplation take place before the mover speaks of her/his experience and names any movement she/he can recall. Then she may invite witnessing of the movements at which point the witness speaks of her/his experience in the present tense and only where it connects to the movements named by the mover. This is a movement practice respectful of all value systems and anyone is welcome to join.
Held in the safe space of a spacious studio, it is facilitated by a qualified dance movement psychotherapist. The session will start with a group check-in and warm-up. Participants will then work in pairs to take turns to move for a specified time (decided together on the day depending on needs) and for post-moving processing. The session ends with a warm-down and closure as a group. The number of participants in each workshop will be kept to a maximum of 8 to allow sufficient privacy and space for individual movement. No dance experience is required to participate in Authentic Movement.
Participants are encouraged to come on time to keep disruption to a minimum and to be respectful of others' processes during the time of moving.
Cost: £20 for each workshop; £15 for students (payment required to confirm a place in the workshop).
