LEC Movie night: Herr Lehmann

  • Feb 28, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

In October 1989, the part of the West Berlin borough of Kreuzberg called SO 36, had been largely shut off by the Wall from the rest of the city for 28 years. A lethargic sub-culture of students, artists, bohemians and barflies had flourished among crumbling buildings. Part of that microcosm is barkeeper Frank, semi-formally called 'Herr Lehmann' by friends and patrons. He hangs out drinking, sports utter disregard for anything beyond SO 36 and lazily pursues an affair with cook Katrin. His lifestyle is gradually disturbed, when his parents show up for a visit, things go awry with Katrin and his best friend Karl starts to act strange. Meanwhile, political turmoil mounts on the other side of the Wall.

Awards:

4 wins including the FIPRESCI Prize at the Lecce Festival of European Cinema 2004 and 5 nominations.

IMDB Rating: 7.3

Running time: 105 minutes

The movie will start at 7.30pm, but I will get there from about 7.00pm to set up the room.  There is enough space for you to join us upstairs and make use of the bar and space.

Please note that we show this movie for educational purposes within our club.  This is a strict members only event.  Please do not embarrass yourself (and us) by bringing a guest, who we would need to turn away.

Please note that we ask members for a contribution of £3 to allow us to budget for future events.  Your support is very much appreciated! Thanks.

The upstairs bar will be opened for us from 7.00pm and please order any drinks and food at this bar.

Fantastic movie, so much going on below the obvious: personal walls, sheltering a limbo life, come crumbling down. A number of threads converging in a crescendo, to end in the collective collapse of the actual wall - beautifully thought, built and delivered. Thank you Marion & Penny : )

I must admit, I was also wondering if I saw the same film???! Overall I didn't find it engaging

The movie was OK and interesting in parts. However, the discussion afterwards was quite engaging (and opinionated in some instances) which made it an interesting evening.

Great film about cool Berlin, and very interesting debate afterwards. Enlightening for non Germans. Couldn't register, film had just started.

The movie was very boring an one of the worst I have ever seen. The best for me was the discussion after. Thank you so much Marion for sharing your personal experiences, much more interesting than the movie. Thanks to Penny for sharing her Berlin experience too. And thanks to all the other commentators, surreal or not: they made me smile and even laugh at some point!

I enjoyed the film. Thank you, Marion, for organising the event and Penny for proposing the film. Like many things made up (and so are films by their nature), it required one to acquire the right frame of mind to appreciate the film. Otherwise it would be difficult to do so obviously. Thanks again.

Having been away from the Club lately I really enjoyed "coming back". The film was moderately intersting but the first hand experiences of Berliners and others who lived in Germany at the end of the cold war were absolutely fascinating. Thank you all for sharing your personal life stories and thank you Marion for organising.

It must be something in the air, Richard. I am very sorry-I have also woken up feeling rotten and won't be able to attend. I hope it all goes well tonight.

Really sorry, have gone down with a filthy cold overnight - better for my fellow Europeans if I don't infect them. Sorry about the late notice.
