By popular demand, we will repeat our 2012 visit to a village open garden event. These surely qualify as one of our many great British institutions, where normal village residents open up their gardens, sell plants and serve tea & cakes to the general public, with the proceeds going to charity. The event in Bayford is particularly special, both for the range of gardens, which encompass everything from humble workers' cottages to ostentatious banker-bonus mansions and because there will be high quality brass, steel and jazz bands performing.
We will combine our visit to Bayford's gardens with a relaxed stroll through the attractive Hertfordshire countryside from Broxbourne to Hertford. This includes extensive rolling countryside and surprisingly rural mixed use farmland.
We will aim to get to Bayford by 12:00 and reconvene ready for the second part of the hike at 15:30 at the village pub (Baker Arms).
Travel there by train: meet me BEFORE 09:00 at Liverpool Street mainline station to sort out tickets. Our train departs from platform 1 at 09:21 and arrives in Broxbourne at 09:54.
If, like me, you need a coffee to join the land of the living at this time of the morning, getting a free Bite card gets you 20% off at many station outlets: https://www.bitecard.co.uk/Home
The cost to include the guided and backmarked hike, plus the return train fares, is £10. Please pay the hike leader in cash on the train. Entry to the gardens is an additional £8.00 each, but it all goes to charity!
If coming by car, there is a car park at Broxbourne station, costing £1.40 and you can return there by train from Hertford at the end of the hike.
There will be plenty of opportunities to grab food, drink and refreshing beverages in Bayford, but I will also be taking a picnic to enjoy whilst listening to one of the bands. As per tradition, we will also end the hike (~17:00) at a pub in Hertford, where we may just possibly be inspired to play a few games too!
The walking pace will be sociable and the terrain is only moderately undulating, but a reasonable level of fitness and suitable clothing / footwear are required to enjoy the trip.

Only RSVP YES if you are certain that you can come to this event and update your RSVP if you can no longer attend. Meetup Meetup events are organised by enthusiastic volunteers and we restrict numbers at many events for logistical, safety or quality reasons. If you don't show up to three events that you have RSVP'd YES to without good reason, you will be banned from the Club, as you could be preventing other members from attending events. Changing your RSVP in the last 24 hours prior to the event is strongly discouraged.
