Would you like to experience real winter and improve your skiing skills? Treat yourself at the end of this year and join us for a trip to Borovetz where you can enjoy an outdoor thermal spa while watching the snow fall.
We traditionally end the year and welcome the new one in a remote and under-crowded ski centre in the Balkans, surrounded by hot mineral springs and open air spas at our disposal. This year we are going to Borovetz in Bulgaria to welcome 2017 in the fabulous company of London Europeans.

This European holiday is for those who want to find out something about less explored parts of Europe, learn how to ski and pamper themselves in the middle of winter.
Researching the slopes of Bulgarian mountains and national parks, in the most western part of Bulgaria, within the National park Rila, we discovered what is most certainly a jewel and a very under-exploited skiing resort. Having visited all main ski centers in Bulgaria and many more in the Balkans, Borovetz is the place we'd like to share with friends again and again.
This winter we will spend 7 days in a hotel that has indoor pool, Jacuzzi and saunas where we'd spend the long winter afternoons, right before hitting the Bulgarian "mehana" (local word for bar). During the day, we'll be renting equipment to go skiing on our own or with an instructor - more info about the terrains here. Ski pass and rental of skis, boots and poles start at 40 euro per day. Amazingly this price includes a group ski instructor.
We will have a van and a driver for optional day-trips: within the range of 40 km from Borovetz, there are cute little village hotels that are built on hot mineral springs pampering both body and soul. One of them, Sapareva Banya has the ONLY geyser in the Balkans. The temperature of the water is 103 Celsius.
We can visit also open air spas in nearby Dolna Banya, Belchin and Pchelin.
One of the highlights of this trip is a half-day visit to Rila Monastery. Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe.
We can also be visiting the lowest of the 7 Sacred Rila Lakes - natural glacier lakes on Rila mountain that can be reached by ski-lift at Panichishte, where we can also learn about the White Brotherhood - one of Europe's liveliest mass meditation sessions that happens every August.
We will also visit the reconstructed Medieval settlement and the remains of the castle of kings that once ruled this strategic area rich in nature and mineral waters.Until recently the fortress known as “Cari Mali Grad” existed only in folklore legends. Archaeologists did not know its exact location but treasure hunters managed to find it. The site turned out to be a great find and in 2007 Bulgarian archaeologists managed to uncover a fortress tower, which is part of a Roman fortress, with a 400m long wall.
This skiing trip is for skiers of all levels, but especially for beginners and intermediate skiers who want to improve their skiing skills. The trails within Borovetz are equipped with snow cannons and few of them also offer night skiing. To learn more about winter sports in Bulgaria see this video:
On the 31st we will have a New Year's party at the hotel, the Bulgarian way.
And if you think that you will have energy to do more after days of skiing and nights of partying, here are a few more options: horse-back riding on a snowy trail, snow-doo (kind of a hiking trough snow), snow-boarding, "turbofolk" partying. Don't forget that one can always accept the challenge of a pursuit for the ultimate Bulgarian dish, ultimate massage, ultimate local Rakia (walnut, honey and plum flavour are my personal favourites)...
Since we're flying to and from Sofia, we will have an opportunity for a short site seeing around the city which will be decorated for the holidays.
This is how we plan to end 2016 and welcome 2017. Do join us if you are up for a skiing and spa adventure this winter.
