LEC Movie night: Character (Karakter)

  • Jan 24, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Character is a 1997 Dutch film, based on the best-selling novel by Ferdinand Bordewijk and directed by Mike van Diem.

In the Netherlands of the 1920s, Dreverhaven, a dreaded bailiff, is found dead, with a knife sticking out of his stomach. The obvious suspect is Jacob Willem Katadreuffe, an ambitious young lawyer who worked his way up from poverty, always managing to overcome Dreverhaven's personal attacks against him. Katadreuffe was seen leaving Dreverhaven's office on the afternoon of the murder. He is arrested and taken to police headquarters, where he reflects back on the story of his long relationship with Dreverhaven, who, police learn, is also Katadreuffe's father.

The complicated relationship between Katadreuffe and Dreverhaven lies at the center of this film. Unrequited love and blind ambition are among the other themes, as is the difficulty of some characters to express emotions fully and the repercussions that ensue.

Awards:

Oscar 1997 (Best Foreign Language Film), 11 other awards and 5 nominations.

Running time: 122 minutes

Meet up:

The movie will start at 7.30pm, but I will get there from 6.30pm to set up the room. There is enough space for you to join us upstairs and make use of the bar and space.

Please note that we show this movie for educational purposes within our club. This is a strict members only event. Please do not embarass yourself (and us) by bringing a guest, who we would need to turn away.

Please note that we ask members for a contribution of £3 to allow us to budget for future events. Your support is very much appreciated! Thanks.

The upstairs bar will be opened for us from 7.00pm and please order any drinks and food at this bar. Please note that the kitchen will close at 9.00pm, so if you want to have food you will need to order before then.

News today that bailiff's powers are to be curbed - coincidence, or did Marion have inside information before selecting this film??

Well, you will never know. But that bailiffs should not enter properties where only minors are present is a no-brainer.

Excellent choice of movie - I enjoyed watching it (although I missed the start) and discussing it afterwards. I found the choice of colours and light particularly interesting.

    Thanks Marion,

I saw this movie 15 years ago in Holland when it came out. Was nice to see the film again and looking forward to more great movies.

Thanks for organising again Marion. Good conversations before and after the film. The film was fine. You should definitely ask for another promotion.

Sadly I can't join, am working that day. Good choice for the movie though, have seen it before and is very interesting. Have read Bordewijk too, not an easy read but rewarding. Hope to be able to attend some other screening soon.
