A Ruined Abbey, Ancient Woodland, the Thames

  • This location is shown only to members

Walk length 10 miles/16km approx. Circular.

A mixed urban, river and woodland walk to the south east of London involving a river trip from central London passing many great London sights.

Walk Description

Beginning at the Royal Arsenal Woolwich Pier after a river bus from Embankment pier this walk takes in some unusual south east London green spaces including the Thames Path extension east, the Green Chain walk to Lesnes Abbey and its woods, Bostall Woods and Plumstead Common before a return train journey back to central London from Woolwich Arsenal Station to London Bridge.

Particular highlights on this walk include some ancient woodland through Lesnes Abbey Woods and the ruins of Lesnes Abbey itself which was built in the 12th century and views of the Thames from the Thames path extension.

Lunch & Finish: Bring water and a snack lunch. This walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a snack lunch stop and pub stop at the end, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (we have a relaxed pace which includes sightseeing and photography).

Meeting:

River Bus: Meet outside Embankment Pier (photo right) for 0940 sharp to get the river bus at 1003 getting to Woolwich Arsenal Pier for 1101 (we need to get this boat). See River Bus

The single river bus trip is £6.50 (£5.85 with an Oyster, £4.30 with a travelcard).

You can if you wish skip the boat trip and meet us at Woolwich Arsenal pier at 1101 for the start of the walk.

Return trip after the walk is via Woolwich Arsenal train station (Zone 4) which has regular trains back to London Bridge; and also has a DLR station. See National Rail & Transport for London

Everyone I have changed the station at the end to Woolwich Arsenal, which has both DLR and overground trains and also a better choice of pubs at the end! This may extend the walk a little, so I have put the walk down for 10 miles, hope this is OK. Hoping for some great weather Sat!
