March Meetup: "City of Women" by David Gillham - Our 40th meetup!!!!

We will be discussing "City of Women" by David Gillham. Details below. Thanks to everyone who voted to help choose the book.

This will be our fortieth meetup!

Description

It is 1943 - the height of the Second World War. With the men taken by the army, Berlin has become a city of women. And while her husband fights on the Eastern Front, Sigrid Schröder is, for all intents and purposes, the model soldier's wife: she goes to work every day, does as much with her rations as she can, and dutifully cares for her meddling mother-in-law. But behind this façade is an entirely different Sigrid, a woman who dreams of her former Jewish lover, who is now lost in the chaos of the war.

Sigrid's tedious existence is turned upside-down when she finds herself hiding a mother and her two young daughters: could they be her lover's family? Now she must make terrifying choices that could cost her everything.

Justin, sorry something has come up last minute and I won't be able to get along tonight after all. Say hi to everyone for me! Not very struck by the book but I suspect the conversation around it will be good.

I really hope to make it to this book group in march. I have recently moved to Essex from Dublin where I was in another book group and I'm missing my fellow book lovers :-)
I actually recently picked up this book in waterstones and put it on my mental list, so it's great that you gave me an excuse to buy it!

Thanks, Richard and Caroline! Daphna: feel free to drop me a private message if you have any particular questions. But we have new faces every time, it's very relaxed and informal. Look forward to meeting you.

Daphna, also, pretty much every time there have been one or two new people at the evening so chances are there could be someone besides yourself that has not been before. Justin facilitates the group in a very inclusive and gentle way so no need to be anxious.

Daphna. We talk about the book. There's some turn-taking and some jumping in if you want. NO stage fright needed! Come and enjoy!

    Hello All!! :)
This will probably sound properly silly to most of you, but seeing as I've never been a part of a book club before maybe someone'd like to explain to me how the meetups look? What do we talk about?
(and am i expected to actively jump in? I have a little stage-fright going on..)
Hope you all have a lovely weekend whatever you're doing :)
