Rolling Eye 6 Day Game Jam (with provided eye-tracking hardware!)

Here's a jam with a bit of a difference! We've gotten hold of a dozen or so eye-tracking devices, and what better thing to do with them than to let y'all jam with them?!

Behold the ROLLING EYE jam! And since you probably need some time to get used to the hardware (http://www.tobii.com/en/eye-experience/eyex/) and the quirks of the unreleased device, we'll give you extra time - 6 days to be exact. More time to come up with cool concepts, code and polish! Or enough time to make a smaller game if you've only got the evenings.

Here's how it'll go down:
- YOU'LL NEED TO REGISTER YOUR TEAM AT http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rolling-eye-tickets-12741463059 -- Only one registration per team needed!
- We've only 15 or so devices, so that'll be the limit of number of teams. If you don't have a team, you can write a message below to formate yourselves! If there's enough interest, we could meet up on Monday at Scenario Bar to form things in person.
- The start is at Scenario, where the kits will be delivered, theme revealed and questions answered.
- During the jam week, you are very welcome to use Scenario's co-working facility, every day from 11am to 6pm. It will be a long and relaxed jam!
- At 3pm on September the 6th, the teams will present their games at Scenario, winners be chosen and rewarded.
- Prizes: At the moment, we have 4 EyeX kits to give away to winners, a tab from Scenario/Loading, and a cake. We are still negotiating with other potential sponsors, there might be special accessibility category and other goodies.

Looking good? Eye though so!

Wrote up my thoughts on the jam on my blog and on gamasutra: http://gamasutra.com/blogs/JamesCoote/20140908/225122/Its_in_the_Eyes.php

It's the time that's missing for me. I've just got too many commitments, so this gets put on the backburner until I have a free weekend.

    Hey everyone!

I sent you emails asking for some info/screenshots, could you please reply as soon as you can, please?

Most urgently I need description/credits, then screenshots, and then a working build if you haven't done that yet. Thank you so very much!

What time does Scenario/London Gamespace open tomorrow? We were thinking of coming down early to work on our game before the 3pm deadline

Is anyone else experiencing Unity crashes when using eyeX? :(

    September 4, 2014

    • Denes

I mentioned it to Rickard, maybe he can do something about it. Although given the short timeframe in our case, it might not make much difference. As for myself i've added a switch in my wrapper to emulate gaze position using the mouse so i can do quick tests without crashing all the time.

      Crashing a lot, mine :S

YAY! Finally received my usb3.0 card (after a lazy a** postman almost managed to completely sabotage my efforts, long story), installed it, and HAVE EYE TRACKING! =o)
Phew. so i can start working. tried the tutorials and unity demos, so everything seems up and running. Lights, camera, ACTION! :)

ps. how's it going over there? :)

      September 3, 2014

  • Denes

Well, ran into a minor issue right away tyring to install: eyeX needs usb3.0 and all my ports are usb2 :o/
So i guess need to order an extra card on amazon and work "blind" (how appropriate:) until it arrives... any better ideas?

    • Fausto F.

I have the same issue. Probably going to try to use my work's laptop, or maybe I'll just buy another one (I was already thinking about that). But it is annoying anyway! :P

      September 1, 2014

    • Alice N.

Well, that's annoying. Until you solved that, you can come here and use our PC

Ok.. bought one ticket. I was a bit reluctant since there are so many with so much talent in this group that could create better things with this hardware. But I just saw a lot of tickets were still free. I'm going to give it my best go with my evenings after work :)

Sure, we can fix it here.

You can also team up if you feel like!

      August 31, 2014

  • Denes

Hi, i'm curious but don't have a team, i guess it's ok to pop in nevertheless? I'm happy to join someone or declare myself a team if necessary :)

I recommend deciding before arriving, and the main reason is that the number of hardware kits is limited. Also, it is a minijam, with a fairly high chance of winning. I guess there will be many one man bands, as in case of winning you'll keep the prize solely to yourself

      August 28, 2014

    • Denes

      yay! :)

      August 29, 2014

  • Gorm L.

Would running a lowpass filter over the noise help, or do you think they are already that?

    August 26, 2014

  • Robin B.

I've tried out their hardware at GDCE in Cologne a few weeks back. It works fairly well! You'll need to calibrate it, and after it's fairly accurate (+- 1cm of where I was looking at, with a somewhat noisy signal).
