Flights, by Olga Tokarczuk
Our book for 06 January will be Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Flights, the winner of the 2018 Booker International Prize. Tokarczuk describes her work as a “constellation novel,” a kaleidoscopic meditation about travel in the twenty-first century and human anatomy, told through 130+ narrative vignettes—some as short as a paragraph and none more than 32 pages. Tokarczuk interweaves travel narratives and reflections on travel with an in-depth exploration of the human body, broaching life, death, motion, and migration. Flights is available in paperback, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions, translated by Jennifer Croft, 432 pages. ISBN-13:[masked] The Lit Salon Book Club is an outgrowth of the London Literary Salon, which for 15 years has offered weekly, discussion-based studies of classic and modern literature. We meet one Sunday evening a month in a comfortable home in West Norwood (SE27 0RL). Our discussions are relaxed and conversational, and we use an experienced professional facilitator to draw out your ideas, balance participation and keep the conversation on track. You don't need a degree in literature, just a willingness to read carefully, listen generously and engage with other thoughtful readers. Your first month at the Lit Salon Book Club is free, after that we have a membership fee of £15 per meeting to keep things running smoothly and compensate our facilitator. We're focused on quality of discussion and we keep the group small, so the fee helps guarantee that participants will attend and will have read well. With our friendly atmosphere of collaborative inquiry, high-quality and challenging readings, professional facilitation and focused discussions, we are confident in considering the Lit Salon Book Club the best book discussion group in London.
