What we're about

There are over 250 museums in London and no, I haven't visited them all either! I therefore thought it was about time to up the tally and see some new places in the capital. While I have a good social life in London, I don't really know people who like hitting a museum, historical exhibition or random old place in the way I do. I thought I can't be the only one so decided to have a crack at a meetup group for people around my age.

I aim to mix up a museum trip with a coffee house meeting point before and a pub social after. I will also put together a short quiz sheet before every visit for you to find out more about where we are going as we have a cup of coffee.

To cover admin costs I have decided to charge £1 per trip. I did um and ah about this, but I hope members appreciate that it does cost something to run a meetup group and members will be OK will it. The original price was £2 but as the group has been successful and I am making back the costs of running the group I have reduced the event price for 2019.

So if you are a person in your thirties or forties looking to fill a history shaped hole followed by a drink or few, then please come join an A-Z museum journey around London. If you have any suggestions for places you would like to visit or any comments, I would be really happy to hear from you.

You can also find the group on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LondonMuseumsAZ where I shall try to tweet some facts about the places we will be visiting before we go.

Best wishes, Jonny - Group Organiser of London Museums A-Z - for 30s and 40s.

K is for... Kempton Steam Museum and Railway

Snakey Lane

£1.00

Kempton Steam Museum is home to the world’s largest working triple-expansion steam engine. It stands as high as four stacked double-decker buses and along with its identical twin, pumped vast volumes of London’s drinking water from 1929 to 1980.

A bit off the beaten track, the museum and its engines are housed within a grand Scheduled Monument located at Thames Water’s Kempton Park Pumping Station in south-west London. The mighty steam engines have been preserved since 1995 by the Kempton Great Engines Trust to ensure that their engineering magnificence is treasured for generations to come.

One of the engines, 'Sir William Prescott', will be in action on 17 October. Come and see how the engine is started up!

The nearby Hampton-Kempton Steam Railway, which was used to transport coal to the steam engines from the Thames, will also be in action.

LoMAZ Day Trip: Mary Rose, Portsmouth

Portsmouth Harbour Station Pier

£1.00

"Best and dearest flower that grows, Perfect both to see and smell; Words can never, never tell, Half the beauty of a Rose." - Cicely Mary Barker

Join us on a day trip to visit the Mary Rose and the historic dockyard in Portsmouth.

"The Mary Rose was a ship in Henry VIII’s navy, which he had built when he came to the throne in 1509. Construction began in 1510, and the ship was finally launched in 1511.
In 1545, the Mary Rose was part of a defensive fleet when a large French armada attacked the Isle of Wight, with the intent of invading England via Portsmouth. For reasons unknown the Mary Rose managed to capsize, taking her crew of around 500 to the bottom of the sea just a couple of miles from the coast of Portsmouth. The ship is arguably more famous for the massive salvage operation in 1982, when she was returned to the surface on live television, an event seen by around 60 million people worldwide.
The Mary Rose is the only ship of her kind in existence anywhere in the world, and there is a lot that can be learned about ship construction in the time of Henry VIII.
More importantly, the objects found on board can tell us more about the lives of normal people, as alongside the guns and weapons we found personal items, such as clothing, bowls and tankards, even jewellery, musical instruments and nitcombs. Many of the objects found on the Mary Rose are unique, so they can tell us things about the past we never knew."

LoMAZ Away Break: The Brixham Pirate Festival in Devon Sat 30 Apr-Mon 2 May 2022

As many of you know, LoMAZ likes to dress up whenever the opportunity arises. Therefore when I heard about the Pirate Festival in Devon, I thought it just had to be done as an event!

So join us for a LoMAZ away break in the picturesque English Riviera for the May Day bank holiday weekend!

The Brixham Pirate Festival is advertised as a "swashbuckling mix of piratical fun and entertainment! There will be LOTS of pirates, military and period re-enactors here with guns and cannons to make plenty of noise! We will make sure there is plenty of music too with shanties and pirate rock."

You will join "a mass gathering of Pirates from all walks of life. With amazing live music, street entertainers, a Shanty Town, a family area, living history exhibits and skirmishes (very loud bangs and cannon fire!) the full programme will be available via www.brixhampirates.com."

You will need to book your own accommodation through airbnb, at a campsite or at a hotel. I have booked accommodation for the Fri, Sat and Sun nights. Paignton and Torquay are a bus ride away from Brixham.

Once the festival programme is published I will arrange an itinerary for the group.

This should be a fun bank holiday weekend, so if you are interested please book your accommodation asap!
