Rescheduled: Philosophy picnic. Pre-Socratics. What have they ever done for us?

What have the pre-Socratics done for us? Well, they took the mythology of Homer and Hesiod, shook it upside down and out popped science, logic and mathematics. We will be looking at the major schools, the Milesian, Eleatic and Pythagorean and some of the characters associated with them, Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, Parmenides and Zeno, Pythagoras and Philolaus.

Well done Will, nice précis of pre-socs. Lots of interesting comments and questions from participants. I'm left with thinking that what the pre-socs have done for us is devise approaches to considering the world. Take our current state of knowledge - how far have we come? Xeno's paradoxes might be applied effectively to the 'fine grainedness' of what we can come to know, or Democritus' atomism as a metaphor for a foundational 'truth' in logic compared to 'reality'. Bertie thinks Diogenes is cool, although perhaps with more wagging of the tail and less of the finger and tongue.

Great - However, I think the qauntification of a qualitative experience is a bit silly -above-

It was a good picnic. I met interesting people, and the Philosophy Top Trumps cards prepared by Will were excellent! A good intro talk too, about the pre-Socratics.

Thanks everyone who came along; I had an excellent time and met some great people. I'm starting to think about another meeting, if anyone has anything they would particularly like to discuss, let me know and perhaps we can arrange something. I'm giving the meet up five stars, but that is due more to the calibre of the people who attended than my slightly delirious presentation. Hope to see you all again soon. Will

I will be brining my dog (who, like philosophers, can be difficult to understand at times), however if anyone would rather I didn't then please do let me know.
