Kevin Ryan: Beyond Story Points

Through estimation we guard against excessively large work items entering the development workflow. A consistent reduction in work item size smooths development flow and facilitates a consistent release of value out of the development process and into the production environment. The ability to assess the potential cycle time to deliver any given work item is fundamental if we are to achieve this goal.

This talk discusses two estimation methods that help us achieve the objective of high quality estimation conducted just-in-time. They are: Dynamic Range Estimation (DRE) and Limited Days Estimation (LDE).

Kevin has more than fourteen years commercial experience in the design and development of enterprise scale software applications. He is the author of both the Dynamic Range and Limited Days estimation techniques and is principal contributor to the IT Kanban Framework. He works with companies to support their transition to lean and agile methods from team to enterprise scale.

I was a little late unfortunately so missed some key points but Kevin was talking some sense. It's not always straight forward to get Senior Management buy in however.

Kevin gave an excellent talk on DRE. Just a real shame he hadn't budgetted enough time to talk through the second technique (LDE).

This was very interesting. Ryan has a great presentation style. Please bring him back so we can cover more with him. It was great meeting some people from the group. An all-round enjoyable evening. Thanks!

It has been a great pleasure to be in the LSUG. I learned new thing tonight and I'm going to apply the DRE technique to the agile project planning and also will try Spike. Thanks for the sharing and hope to see some of you in Shanghai one day!

Interesting, thought provoking and I'll hopefully be using the dynamic ranged estimating in practice soon.

Terrific! It couldn't have been otherwise with Kevin. The use of real life examples from the audience's current projects in combination with his extensive knowledge and experience has provided highly valuable insights that we can all implement in different scenarios.

Apologies, stuck at work sorting out a release. Think I'm going to give up trying to attend anything on a Tuesday.

Hopefully see some of you at XP days next week
