Join us for a stroll in Crystal Palace Park, famous for its now lost Palace. Walk length 4miles/6.4 km approx. linear. This walk finishes at Forest Hill (Overground).

The end time may vary, depending on the weather and pace. The ground is undulated with some gentle slopes. The pace is relaxed, though you need to be able to walk easily.

We shall start with a visit to the small Crystal Palace Museum near the park. No one else could give you a better picture of what the palace looked like. There are photos, memorabilia and objects that survived the fire. It's run by volunteers and they welcome donations to help keep this fascinating museum open.

A glass and iron structure, Crystal Palace was primarily built in 1851 for the Great Exhibition which was held in Hyde Park, London. The palace reflected Victorian industrial and technological achievements. The project of an exhibition was initiated by Prince Albert who was head of the Society of Arts.

The palace was expensive to maintain and faced financial hardship. It was declared bankrupt in 1911, neglected and eventually burnt to the ground in 1936. The site was used in the 1970s for car racing.

Crystal Palace and its surrounding grounds were aimed at both entertaining and educating visitors. The growing interest in natural history with the discovery of dinosaur fossils thirty years earlier inspired the creation of dinosaur sculptures. Though contemporary science debates their accuracy, these dinosaurs still fascinate. They are now Grade I listed.

We shall walk through Sydenham Wells Park to Forest Hill where this walk finishes. At the end of the walk, we'll use the Capitol pub near Forest Hill station for optional drinks and socialising. The Capitol is a former cinema and later bingo, beautiful and very affordable.

Comfortable walking shoes and bottled water are recommended.
