Convolutional Neural Networks for Artistic Style Transfer (Hands-on session)

There are some amazing apps out right now (like Prisma and Lucid) that transform your photos into works of art using the styles of famous artwork and motifs. These apps perform such style transfer with the help of a branch of machine learning called convolutional neural networks. In this workshop, we’re going to take a journey through the world of convolutional neural networks from theory to practice, as we systematically reproduce this visual effect in TensorFlow and Keras.

Don’t forget to bring your laptops since there are going to be practical sessions!

Some knowledge of programming in Python, mathematics (e.g. linear algebra) and at least a conceptual introduction to machine learning will be helpful to get the most out of this workshop. But if you aren’t comfortable with these yet and are simply curious, you are still more than welcome to get exposed to new ideas.

AGENDA:

5:45 Please arrive promptly, grab a seat and set up your laptop

6:00 The session starts

7:00 Break time: pizza, beer and networking

7:20 Continuing the session

8:20 End of the meetup, heading off to a local pub The Eagle (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/The+Eagle/@51.5286095,-0.0916472,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xe3fccd5854295903!8m2!3d51.5286095!4d-0.0916472) (2 Shepherdess Walk, London N1 7LB)

*** How to prepare for the workshop***

If you’re planning on bringing your computer, please:

• Make sure it’s fully charged as there will be limited access to power sockets.

• Remember to go to https://github.com/hnarayanan/artistic-style-transfer beforehand and follow the instructions to setup the requirements for the IPython notebooks that we’ll be stepping through. Also try them each once to make sure you have everything setup properly.

Please help us better understand your background and interests by answering this super short survey: http://bit.ly/2kRi6CD (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScVEECcAU7TieEmzUDi9kdiggGmsaWJi2FpW0zsrNaHzRQMZQ/viewform)

We look forward to seeing you all soon!
