TRIP FULL Lunar landscapes and Mt Teide volcano - Tenerife hiking adventure
6-day Tenerife hiking and Mount Teide adventure! Only 8 places available, first come first served. 2 - 7 May 2018 (7th May is Bank Holiday) Only £235 (Early Bird) or £255 I'm organising this trip with my other Meetup group Adventure Go ( TRIP HIGHLIGHTS: - Mount Teide - 3718 meters high, the highest mountain in Spain, the third largest volcano in the world. The ascent does not involve any technical climbing, we will be hiking up well defined paths. - Parque Nacional de las Cañadas (aka Teide National Park) - spectacular national park in the middle of an ancient volcano crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site - sleeping near the sky at 3,270m (amazing sunset and sunrise views!) - hike through amazing lunar landscapes and pine forests near Vilaflor, the highest village on the island - El Medano - famous for it's beach, surfing and Montana Roja nature reserve Here you can see pictures from similar Tenerife trips we've run in the past: 2017: 2016: 2014: Day 1 – Wednesday 2 May 2018 We arrive to Tenerife and make our way to the village of Vilaflor at 1,500 meters above sea level, and the highest village on the island. You have time to acclimatize and explore the village, which was founded in the sixteenth century. Saint Peter of Saint Joseph Betancur ( was born in Vilaflor in 1626. In the evening, we will have dinner together in one of the local restaurants (included). Day 2 - Thursday 3 May 2018 Our first hike - from the Parque Nacional de las Cañadas at 2,200m we walk back to Vilaflor, over the most stunning volcanic landscapes, through pine forests and visiting fascinating Paisaje Lunar (Lunar landscape) rock formations on our way. This is a very scenic linear walk of medium difficulty and will take us about 6 hours. Day 3 – Friday 4 May 2018 We check out from our apartments, then transfer to the Teide National Park. On our hike up the mountain, we will pass Montana Blanca and Huevos del Teide (Teide Eggs) – giant spheroids of lava scattered around the landscape. Our goal is to reach Altavista del Teide Refuge, where we will spend the night. This is a strenuous hike starting at 2350m and finishing at 3270m. It will take approximately 3-4hrs, depending on the pace of the group. We’ll have plenty of time so we can take as many stops as we need. There is no advantage in rushing to reach Altavista – the kitchen does not open until 5pm and the bedrooms do not open until 7pm. So it is better to take our time and enjoy the views on the way up! There is a lava cave La Cueva de Hielo some 20 mins up from Altavista, which we could go explore before sunset. It is full of ice, even in the height of summer, and there is a ladder to descent into cave, for those brave enough! Altavista’s location offers stunning sunset and sunrise views, and, in the evening, an excellent opportunity for stargazing! Day 4 – Saturday 5th May 2018 Our longest walking day. We rise early and start our ascent at the first light of dawn. We might need to use torches. It takes about hour/hour and a quarter to reach the start of the summit trail – we need to be there before 9 am in order to be allowed on the summit trail. From the start of the trail it is only some 180m to the top, but it is a slow climb due to low oxygen levels. When we reach the Pico Teide summit at 3718m, we will have time to take in the views before we turn back. On clear days you can enjoy 360 degree panoramic views of Tenerife and see across the ocean to the neighbouring islands of Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. From the summit, we start our descent, and do another spectacular walk via Pico Viejo, the second highest summit on Tenerife (3135m), and a massive 800m volcanic crater. From Pico Viejo we descend to Parador de las Cañadas del Teide hotel, grab some refreshments before taxi takes us down to the coast, to a small seaside town El Medano, which is favoured by locals for their holidays and away from the mass tourism mega-developments further down the coast. Day 6 - Sunday 6 May 2018 We have the whole day to relax, enjoy the sea, go surfing or stand-up-paddleboarding, visit the Montana Roja nature reserve and just generally have a well-deserved chill out! Day 7 - Monday 7 May 2018 Departures. We check out from our apartments and make our way to the airport. !IMPORTANT! - READ BEFORE BOOKING As an adult, you accept that you are, at all times, responsible for your own safety.
