Halloween inspired walk around Highgate Cemetery plus Hampstead Heath

  • Oct 24, 2009 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

A 7 mile walk starting from spooky Highgate Cemetery, right around Hampstead Heath and finishing up at the Spaniard's Inn (thanks to Simon for the pub recommendation).
PLEASE READ details at bottom of page!

Always wanted to visit this famous cemetery but didn't know much about it... it sounds fascinating:

"The Victorian attitude to death and its presentation led to the creation of a wealth of Gothic tombs and buildings. It occupies a spectacular south-facing hillside site slightly downhill from the top of the hill of Highgate itself, next to Waterlow Park...

The cemetery's grounds are full of trees, shrubbery and wild flowers; all of which have been planted and grown without human influence. The grounds are a haven for birds and small animals such as foxes. The Egyptian Avenue and the Circle of Lebanon (topped by a huge Cedar of Lebanon) feature tombs, vaults and winding paths dug into hillsides. For its protection, the oldest section, which holds an impressive collection of Victorian mausoleums and gravestones, plus elaborately carved tombs, allows admission only in tour groups. The newer eastern section, which contains a mix of Victorian and modern statuary, can be toured unescorted." Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.o...

There are some woody areas in Hampstead Heath so hopefully we should be able to kick a few leaves around and enjoy the Autumnal colours.

Highgate Cemetery has it's own flickr group!

20 minutes in the car and suddenly I come across Highgate with its country feel and think I've escaped London! The priest who guided us around the cemetery was very knowledgeable and jovial. It was a perfect time of year to go with Autumn in full bloom with its colours adding to the beauty of the surroundings. A fascinating trip, just a shame I had to scoot off early!

Highgate Cemetery was the perfect location for a Halloween, even in the daylight hours. Our cemetery guide was a great story teller and injected a lot of humour and interesting facts of some infamous yet very significant people. The surrounding landscape of trees gave the cemetery great beauty and a sense of peace.

I loved the tour around Highgate Cemetary and our travels around Hampstead Heath - the food was also brilliant in the Spaniard's Inn :)

Yes the Spaniard's Inn was great - really feels like a coach and horses is going to pull in any minute. Dark and wood panelled and tasty pies.

Great day out. Highgate had even more atmosphere than I thought it might... must have been because it being such a squelchy day. Tour guide knew his stuff and knew how to make it interesting. Nice stretch of the old legs afterwards and I'm glad (and relieved, following my recommending it) that the Spaniard's Inn remains as was and hasn't been turned into a Yates's. :)

I didn't realise the cemetery was still so much in use for burials although there are so many very old ones... It is lovingly maintained even tho it looks a bit crumbling. A priest showed us round and he was a very good story teller and also really cared about the place and people. Being English I found a strong sense of my own cultural history there - rare in these days of shopping malls. All the carvings and designs represent something. Faith, hope and charity!
The heath was lovely and autumn leafy. But it's so small, when you've been escaping outside London! Had to use my compass in the woods :)

Excellent tour of Highgate Cemetery and Hampstead Heath. The Spaniards Inn did not disappoint either.

Sounds like a great idea, have been meaning to go here for a while now so a great opportunity. And I doubt the Spaniard's Inn will disappoint. :)
