Tuesday night gaming

If you are new to London on Board check out this guide for new players. If you have any questions on the night or are having trouble getting into a game, then look out for the night's host, listed to the right.

If you plan on attending please RSVP. We only have 50 chairs and it gets uncomfortable for everyone if more people than that turn up. Similarly, please change your RSVP to no if it turns out you can't make it.

Attention! LoB is part of NineWorlds, a weekend-long, multi-genre convention in London this summer, August 9th-11th, "the mutant hybrid of a science fiction convention crossed with a TED talks conference". It's full of: film and film-making, Doctor Who, science, feminism, Tolkien, SF&F academia, video games,  roleplaying, Discworld, social gaming, SF&F,creative writing, Star Wars, queer fandom, steampunk, open culture, Star Trek, Whedon, skepticism, costuming, comics, anime and J-culture. And boardgaming of course. Get along to the forums for details and a longer discussion. Advance tickets on sale for a discount now.

Anyone fancy pulling together the traditional geeklist?

Oops, should have checked bgg first; thanks Nathan :-)

Ed put us to shame by having Wednesday up before Monday and Tuesday, so I took action!

Played an excellent game of Cyclades with 2 new players, one of whom won the game through the well planned use of a hero. I made a tactical error at the beginning of the game from which I couldn't recover, which is a flaw in the game as I did some excellent plays later on :(

A significant design challenge, I think, to create a multi-player conflict-based game where an early advantage does not snowball, or an early loss spiral into an inevitable decline. Once a resource is lost to one player and gained by another the relative strengths diverge quickly, reinforcing success and punishing failure. This seems to be the fundamental problem that leads to turtling strategies - fear of being on the wrong end of an early encounter.

Spectaculum - Still, very good, simple, quick, circus themed, train and stock market game - Chicago Express / 18xx superlite.
    .....
Agents of SMERSH - Not much of an actual game, but good, fun storytelling.
    .....
Coup - Always great bluffing game.

    1. Spectaculum with Paul Ag. and Soren which Soren won.
    2. King of Tokyo with Mehran, Nadine, Lara David and David. Slow couple of rounds, then 3 of us dropped in quick succession. I moved off to play another round of Spectaculum so not sure who won.
    3. Spectaculum with Fiona, Lloyd and BK which despite feeling like I was losing I managed to win by 1 point, a very convincing win!
    4. Airlines Europe with Fiona, Lloyd, Teri and Stan which ended in another convincing win for me - oh wait, I just won the tiebreaker!
    5. Boy/girl/boy/girl Resistance with Teri, Ronan, BK, Alex, Fiona, Lloyd and Nadine. We three spies won thanks mainly to Fiona looking innocent. My final win of the evening although I basically sat there and did nothing lol.
    A good night.

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers, Little Prince: Build Me A Planet, Taluva (I was playing aggressively apparently but it was probably just some bloodlust left over from the Little Prince game), a busy 8 player Dixit and then Ark Of The Covenant.

Very enjoyable game of Cyclades - thanks go Chris for bringing along (and teaching) the Hades expansion. Ended with teaching Taluva which rarely disappoints.

Not entirely according to plan, but a good selection of gaming: first was introduction to Spectaculum, which was very clever. (My score, alas, was not.) Then a round of Tale of the Arabian Nights. Despite the usual disease / grief / imprisonment / death, all three of us were headed to Baghdad for the win on the same turn. Finished with Santiago de Cuba which is another nice game. Thanks to all my co-players.

Great but I had to run after one game - thanks to my friendly peeps who were willing to try King of Tokyo!

Time to try some of those games at the back of the cupboard. Anyone want to give Troyes one last shout?

    May 10, 2013

      Should be there about 5:45

Newbies: I am hosting tonight. If you're looking to get into a game or being introduced to people, please come talk to me. I seem to be wearing a yellow shirt with a violin, cello, banjo, and some drums right now so...

First-timer here (but not that new to board games). Looking forward to it! Probably going to make it at about 6.15pm - early enough that I can probably find a game?

    2 · May 15, 2013

      I think the scheduled host had to drop out so Martin rustled up another one! I *think* 'assistants' are allowed to add other people as host - I might have to try (-;

Really sad but I can't make it tonight after all. Sorry for messing up the numbers. 100% on for next week though :-)

I think we need to have another bash at Cyclades + Hades expansion. All those interested in conquering a collection of Greek islands with the aid of titans, gods and heroes then feel free to sign up below. The game plays 5, so 4 slots available. I am willing to teach new players btw.

    May 16, 2013

    • Chris O.

OK we're full :) You may want to brush up on your Greek mythology before playing. UNLEASH THE KRAKEN!

      May 20, 2013

Really wanted to give this game another go but I cant make it now. Sorry.

Two spots free on a Tuesday morning? What is LoB coming to?

    May 21, 2013

    • Tom

Three now, can't make it :(

      May 21, 2013

    • Alex C.

      Cant make it either.

Any of the NineWorlds volunteers who are at this meetup: let's have a very quick head-to-head at 7:30, just to catch you up on what we need and where it's at.

Ok I have Cosmic Encounter in the bag as well as Airlines Europe (thanks John!) and Spectaculum.

Chris Leigh/Paul Agapow: Do either or both of you want to play Tales of the Arabian Nights? I remember seeing you both playing it before.

      Sounds good

Dead keen to play the Game of Thrones board game if anyone's bringing it?

    May 14, 2013

    • morgan w.

Dark wings, dark words.... Luckily i've played it a few times already. You are absolutely right about all the intrigue but i would not discourage anyone from playing it provided they have patience and time. First play through usually takes a good few hours but boy is it fun and oh so sneaky. Fancy it?

      May 16, 2013

    • Rowan G.

If you don't find anyone to play tuesday then, you could try to rsvp to a sunday, as there is always a GoT game being played, just mention it when you rsvp.
