Tuesday night gaming

DRAGONMEET: LoB will be running some boardgame sessions at Dragonmeet on 7 December. If you'd like to volunteer to host sessions/explain rules please see this thread.

If you are new to London on Board check out this guide for new players. If you have any questions on the night or are having trouble getting into a game, then look out for the night's host, listed to the right.

If you plan on attending please RSVP. We only have 50 chairs and it gets uncomfortable for everyone if more people than that turn up. Similarly, please change your RSVP to no if it turns out you can't make it.

That was something... Dead ugly board and maybe a game trying to pack too many mechanism in one game... Still somewhat enjoyable and defo more than madly rolling dice...

I think it is that the first game has a bit much for what it is. Second game is better.

Had a fun game of Origin, but it established a pattern for my evening: fatter may make you harder to push around, but it doesn't help you to score more than anyone else. Went on to Trains which is a variation on the Dominion model that I rather like. Here "fatter" meant a deck padded with Waste - and even with the help of Mail Trains it wasn't enough to beat Bill's "strategy". What exactly was that strategy, again, Bill? I think it primarily depended on Soren building big stations for him. Ended up with Space Cadets Dice Duel, where Captain Temple took the bridge and led us to an ignominious defeat, while I tried to coax power out of ma wee bairns down in the engine room. If only the Captain could have loaded missiles we'd have been fine...

I was playing my 'control Soren's mind' strategy and I think it worked very well actually

*That* was my mistake in Space Cadets: I should have played the "Jacob mind control" strategy...

Origin - Always very good. Tried a new strategy resulting in my lowest score ever - clearly well thought out. Or maybe this particular game just turned weird as the other veteran Alex did just as badly.
    .....
Trains - Ok Dominion clone with added map and track-laying and waste cards that pollute your hand, but still not much interaction.
    .....
Salmon Run - Ok Fast Flowing Forest Fellers meets Dominion racing game.
    .....
Dobble - Always great speed recognition game.
    .....
Time 'n' Space - Interestingly different, timed, pick up and deliver, trading game with strangely reversed time-pressure downtime - "COME ON YOU BASTARD TIMER - FINISH NOW!!!", but I am not sure the trading/scoring holds up to closer scrutiny. I have a pulled-out-of-my-arse, potentially game breaking strategy for when/if I play this again (see Origin comment above for how this is likely to turn out).

Ahh ... also, Tsuro - Is this actually a game? Does it matter what you do (except trivially avoiding major cock-ups) until the last few tiles?

      November 27, 2013

    • Stuart (.

Hah, I'm pretty sure you could just lay a tile randomly from the face down deck until the last dozen squares are empty before actually thinking about what to put where.

Several games of Tsuro of the Seas, Carcassonne: Wheel Of Fortune which I'd never played before, TransAmerica with rules dispute, and introduced to Blue Moon City which was good. Finished with a choppy and aborted Citadels. Observed Salmon Run. Skillfully avoided being sucked into Avalon, Dobble and Skulls & Roses - which is a game in itself.

I'll be your host for tonight, come and find me if you have any questions or need any help. That said due to a new job I'll only be there by about 6:15 so regulars please be your usual helpful selves.

This has been something of a disaster of a journey, hope everything is going smoothly.

    I will bring Origin again.

Ian, I suspect you may be thinking of the Phil Eklund game Origins: How we became human. Origin is much more at the family game end of the gaming spectrum. :)

Tsuro's good fun. I just got hold of Tsuro of the Seas for a steal and will be bringing it along tonight too though want to play without the sea monsters.

      November 26, 2013

    • Ben O.

The sea monsters do add a fair bit of chaos :)
