Business Talk and Networking with Eventbrite founders Kevin, Julia & Renaud

Renaud Visage, Kevin and Julia Hartz, Eventbrite

Eventbrite is a self-service ticketing platform that people use to create events, sell tickets and manage registrations for events of all types and sizes.

Eventbrite has processed 200 million tickets for organizers in almost 200 countries. Nearly 100,000 organizers around the world use Eventbrite each month to manage, promote and sell tickets and registrations to all types of events — from small classes, book signings and networking gatherings, to concerts, festivals and conventions for tens of thousands of attendees.

The events platform makes it easy for anyone to discover events via their website or mobile app, and easily share events with friends. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

Initially, Eventbrite's concept was pitched on selling tickets through internet search engines but the start-up boomed in the wake of the social media explosion of the mid-2000s. The evolution of mobile phones and the elimination of the requirement of paper tickets also provided a boost.

Eventbrite's investors include DAG Ventures, Sequoia Capital, T. Rowe Price, Tenaya Capital and Tiger Global.

Thanks Richard Lucas for the concise summary of the takeaways from the evening, as listed below. Likewise to Marian and the Startup Grind team for what was an enjoyable and insightful evening.

A couple of points to add to Richard's:-

    1) Eventbrite was like 'pushing a boulder up a hill' for a significant amount of time. I think Julia mentioned 2 years in the making before they really made headway. 2) Don't bum rush potential mentors at the outset as it's off-putting. A better approach = to let the relationship develop naturally. 3) Don't be closed-minded as to who could become a mentor - in their case an executive from Ticketmaster (name escapes me) fulfils that role which they least expected.

Thank you Marian and StartupGrind, EventBrite, Julia, Kevin and Renaud. Really useful insight into scaling a startup.

Here are a few summary bullets...

…being a successful startup investor is often about selective memory…!

    …second startup Renaud’s have a drive to succeed…

…read Blue Ocean strategy, don't go after the “red, bloodied sea”, go after the under-served market…

…take time to build the numbers and get the model right. Have a bold plan, and hit it, every year…

…don't be capital dependent, moonlight, stay in your job, get something into orbit…

…essentially you have to disrupt your own business…

…failing an investor pitch becomes an opportunity when you hit your targets…

…use KPIs transparently, collaborate and never stop learning…

…for every entrepreneur it's about finding great models…

…don't go too fast and too soon…

    …informal mentors are very helpful…

…be bold, and as a woman, be 10x bolder, audacious but open to input…

    …divide your roles to conquer.
