National Gallery Guided Tour - Part 2: Portraiture of Reynolds & Gainsborough

  • May 10, 2013 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Once a month for the next six months, we will be having private guided tours round the National Gallery on a Friday evening on the paintings of specific periods & artists.

The second one will be on 'The Portraiture of Reynolds & Gainsborough'.

In the month's after, we will be covering:

Fri 14th June - 'William Hogarth and his circle'
Fri 12th July - 'The allure of Venice: Canalleto and Pietro Longhi'

About the guided tour
Joshua Reynolds
through the study of ancient and Italian Renaissance art, and of the work of Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck, brought great variety and dignity to British portraiture.
Reynolds was born at Plympton in Devon, he had a more educated background than that of most painters. When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first President. Although believing that history painting was the noblest work of the painter, he had little opportunity to practise it, and his greatest works are his portraits.

Thomas Gainsborough was, with Reynolds (his main rival), the leading portrait painter in England in the later 18th century. The feathery brushwork of his mature work and rich sense of colour contribute to the enduring popularity of his portraits.
Born at Sudbury, Suffolk, his private inclination was for landscape and rustic scenes, and his amusing letters record his impatience with his clients' demand for portraits.

The tours last 1 hour.  The tour guide will be Lucinda Hawksley who is a regular guide for both the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery.  She is the great-great-great granddaughter of Charles Dickens and has written several books about him, his family and also about the Pre-Raphaelites.

We are having two back to back tours by Lucinda, so please chose when you RSVP whether you want to meet us at the station at 6:15pm or 7:15pm.

The cost is £8 per person for Full Members and £10 per person for everyone else.

Afterwards, we will head to the local bar in the National Gallery for a chat over a drink.

If you can't see us, please call.  Look out for the group sign outside the station:

Hope to see you there!
