Open House (Sunday) - Custom House, Foreign Office & Admiralty House

  • Sep 22, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Once a year 830 private buildings in London open their doors for the weekend and let the public in to look around and admire their architecture.

'Open House' takes place on the weekend of the 21st - 22nd September and we are going to take full advantage of this visiting buildings on the Saturday and the Sunday.

You can either come to all three buildings, or just one or two.  If you want to come to the 2nd or 3rd building we are visiting, see below on where and at what time we will be meeting.

Entry to all buildings is free!

So, on the Sunday we will be visiting:

Custom House (built in 1817)
meeting outside Tower Hill tube station at 9:30am.
Elegant late Georgian building, the 58 metre long neo-classical Long Room was the central reporting point for all London's custom business in the 19th Century.

Finishing about 11:30am.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office (built in 1868)
meeting outside Westminster tube station (come out the main tube entrance, turn right & we will be 30 metres away) at 12:15pm.
Victorian Grade I listed Government Office buildings, includes the magnificently decorated Durbar Court.

Finishing about 1:45pm.

Admiralty House (built in 1725)
meeting outside Charing Cross main train station entrance at 2:15pm
Grade I listed former Old Admiralty Building, now owned by DFID and the Cabinet Office.  Houses works of art & antiques from Ministry of Defence Art Collection.

Finishing about 4:15pm.

We should be finished by 4:15pm, when we will be heading to a local pub to chat over a drink.  Please bring a packed lunch for the day.

If you can't see us outside any tube stations, please either text or call.  I will also be handing out itineraries on the day, so you know where we are if you lose the group.

Look out for the group sign:

Hope to see you there!

I'm so sorry that I could not attend any of the days but my car broke down and had to be fixed over that week-end. Now I have to wait another year...pity!

Robert has asked me to help out today. I'll be at Charing Cross station at 2.15 to take us to the Admiralty. I'll be standing outside the Charing Cross hotel close to the main road. As you come out of the station, turn right and the hotel is at the furthest right of the station building (you will see the flags hanging).

Hi Robert, hope you make a speedy recovery. A friend of mine, who was going to join me, was up in London yesterday and told me that there were phenomenal queues for some of the more high profile buildings eg 2-3 hours. So was just wondering if that could happen to us as would have thought that F&C would be a very popular venue and security will be very tight so that will slow things up a bit as well. My friend is asking me to re-think my plans and go to some more local venues that will not be so popular.
Presume we do not get any priority over other members of the public! I have no experience of Open House Weekend so thought I would seek from others in the know!! I may be losing the debate and will sadly have to pull out if that happens but any comments to the contrary may persuade him otherwise. If I don't make it hope to join you on another event very soon. Thanks

    September 22, 2013

    • Pippa

Hi there, a friend and I went to the FCO yesterday at around 1130 and the queue looked huge-in actual fact it took only 15-20 minutes to get in. It was WELL worth the wait so I would strongly advise you to give it a go. (The queue was all the way down to the end of the road but moved really quite quickly) Have fun!
