'Aristocrats & Artists' - Historic Holland Park Guided Walk

  • Nov 16, 2013 · 1:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come along on Saturday 16th November at either 1:45pm, 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around Historic Holland Park!

We have 3 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP.  If you've never attended before, all three guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it may come up as 1:45pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).

About the walk

The Holland Park area was rural until the 19th century, with most of it was formerly the grounds of Holland House.  In the later decades of that century the owners of the house sold off the more outlying parts of its grounds for residential development, and the district which evolved took its name from the house.

In the late 19th century a number of notable artists and art collectors lived in the area and the group were collectively known as "The Holland Park Circle".  Holland Park is now one of the most expensive residential districts in London or anywhere in the world, with large houses regularly listed for sale at over £10 million.  A number of countries maintain their embassies here.

On the walk we will see Holland Park’s beautiful gardens and the remains of a Jacobean mansion. We move on to the Melbury Road Artists Quarter to admire the magnificent houses of Luke Fildes, William Holman Hunt and Lord Leighton.  We will then explore the delightful streets of Kensington and St Mary Abbots Church with the highest spire in London.

The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 3 groups and we will be guided by Rachel Kolsky (1:45pm), Diane Burstein (2:00pm) and Val Chris (2:15pm).  It will last about 2 hours.

The cost for the guides is £7 per person for Full Member's of the group and £9 per person for non-Members. (payable on the day).

Afterwards we will be heading to the Britannia pub, 1 Allen Street (near to High Street Kensington tube) for a chat over a drink.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Robert

Many thanks, Robert, for arranging this tour. Really enjoyed it and our guide was brilliant (2:00 pm slot). Interesting to know the King of the Zulus also spent time in HP. The day was great, informative with interesting people to meet along the way. Only sorry I couldn't join you for a glass of wine at the pub. Looking forward to the next meetup.

Just made the 2.15 slot due to the challenge with the tube! well worth it, very interesting and Val was an amazing guide, and such incredible history at Holland House. Glad for the glass of vino at the end.

So sorry missed this event - I got as far as London Bridge and then the district line information was that it was not running - travelling proved really difficult so I went home :-((

Val does a great job - but the numbers are getting out-of-hand. Maybe you need a fourth guide?

An enriching afternoon spent around the Holland Park and Kensington area with a first class guide who brought the past alive. A well-planned route with interesting information clearly expressed in digestible chunks. Many thanks.

Excellent not a part of London I know very well being from the SE but Rachel's tour has definitely made me want to come back to Holland Pk in the summer and visit both Leighton and Linley Houses.

My first time ever and was very impressed, although, at times, I noticed that some of the Group `lagged` behind because Diane walked quite quickly.
