Thames Foreshore Visit - Greenwich

  • Apr 1, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Running through the heart of London; the Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed.

Come along on Tuesday 1st April to explore 10,000 years of London’s dynamic history...

About the foreshore
Guided by Nathalie Cohen, an archaeologist from the Museum of London's Thames Discovery Programme, we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide at Greenwich, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in.

Any objects you find you can keep and Nathalie will tell us more about the Foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects.  Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide or by kicking back a few stones with your feet.

Due to Health & Safety, we are limited to 25 people.  If you can't get on, put yourself on the waiting list and I will give you first option on the next foreshore trip we do.

The foreshore is very stoney, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/wellington boots).

Cost is £7 per person for Full Members, everyone else £8 per person.  Plastic gloves will be provided.

Afterwards we will head to a local coffee shop for a hot drink and a chat.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Look out for the group sign -

Hope to see you there!

Regards

Robert

Hello Robert, sorry I won't be able to attend. Might be working all night. I have changed my RSVP and hope it would be useful for someone who is trying to go.

Sorry I now cannot attend as I have to attend a training day at work. I hope to be able to come to similar events in the future.

Sorry to have to miss this but have an urgent dental problem and they could only fit me in Tuesday morning for an appointment. Hope the next person on the waiting list can attend in my place at short notice. Such a shame as I can't often attend these events on weekdays and this week I could!

O-oh, I would so love to come. It's something I have always longed to do, but I'm a proper April Fool, I'm on granny duty!

Hi . Unfortunately I cant t do this due to work commitments

    March 20, 2014

  • Hildegard S.

These walks are excellent, but unfortunately you can't please everybody.

I do apologise if I was being purposely misconstrued by Russell, but I was only meaning that the guided walk last time (Bethnal Green) was nowhere near worth the cost, or time… And I was amazed that this club seemed to be aping the other, unassuming, but cheaper one...

    March 17, 2014

    • David K.

-The unsteady snail's pace..?! -The far too many members giving side commentaries, serving more to distract…?! -The uncertain total message, supposedly of such value…?! -Or was it the overbearing tone of it all…?!

      March 18, 2014

    • Robert

Firstly it wasn't a snail's pace, the walks are a relaxing, social way to see an area. Some members might have grown up in that area, so giving their own insights to places seen on the walk adds to the learning about the area for the rest of those on the walk. The total message of the guided walks is to 'get to know an area of London from a Blue Badge Guide in a friendly group'. What was 'the overbearing tone of it all'?

I'm confused! Blurb above says limited to 25 people, but seems to be 40 RSVP spots? I've RSVP'd yes, as I'd love to do this, but not sure if I'm actually "in"?

      Great, thanks for clarifying!

      March 17, 2014

    • Russell

Emily, you are definitely on the list to attend

      1 · March 18, 2014

  • David K.

Hello Robert, & why is this event only a PRICIER version of one 'Ken's Events' are doing today as well…?! I'm confused, re: the many 'free events' club membership is also supposed to buy me...

    March 16, 2014

    • Christine

Well done Russell - you are so right! And this is absolutely not the same event as Ken's.

      2 · March 17, 2014

    • Falstaff the R.

You are right Mr Russell, I love the foreshore!

      1 · March 17, 2014

  • Sarah

I think I would be inclined to be more charitable and presume it was just a question about why the visit attracted a cost. Having been on two of these foreshore visits I can say, David, that having the archeologists along was worth paying for - they know their stuff and give so much to the event that I for one really benefitted from their insights.

    1 · March 17, 2014

  • Hildegard S.

    I completely agree with Russell.

    1 · March 17, 2014

During work hours so can't make this one - enjoy!
