Day trip to Ely

Come along on Saturday 28th June for a day trip to historic Ely!

About Ely

Ely is a cathedral city, set in the Fens, about 14 miles north east of Cambridge.  An abbey was built here in AD 673 and in 1083 the current cathedral was built (with modifications between[masked] when the octagon was built).  The cathedral is one of England's most beautiful and largest.  It is known locally as 'ship of the fens'

Ely's most famous historical resident was Oliver Cromwell [masked]), who was Lord Protector when Britain was a republic. He started out as a local tax collector, or 'Farmer of the Tithes', for the local parishes. It was up to Cromwell to ensure that all the local taxes - including money, wheat and straw - were delivered to the Dean of the Cathedral. He was permitted to keep any excess collected and soon became a man of property and quite considerable local status. His house still stands, which is now a museum.

We will be having a guided tour of the cathedral (£8.00 per person) we will visit Cromwell's House and the town museum (£6.60 per person - combined ticket).  I will collect this on the train going and pay in bulk when we arrive.

Aprox Itinerary
9:15am - meet at station and get GroupSave train tickets to Ely
9:44am - get train
10:51am - arrive at Ely
11:10am - walk to cathedral and start guided tour (split into 2 groups)
1:00pm - stop for lunch in the Minster Tavern, 1 Minster Place (bring a packed lunch if you wish & eat in the pub garden)
2:15pm - visit Oliver Cromwell's House
3:30pm - visit the town museum
4:30pm - freetime: either look around the town or head back to London (trains coming back:  4:25, 4:52, 5:25, 5:39pm - although some you will have to change at Cambridge)
5:45/6:00pm - get back to London

We will be getting the 9:44am train and we will be able to get half price train tickets, which work out at £12.54 each (we will be purchasing these on the day as people arrive in groups of three).

Look out for the group sign near the ticket office:

If you can’t see us at the station, please call or text.

First went a few years ago and the cathedral is fantastic, so dominating and understandable why it is known as 'the ship of the Fens'.

Likely to still be out of action so going to have to say no to this. Shame as it would have been a nice day out. Have fun everyone.

I had some crazy idea I might try to join you from Stoke-on-Trent, but alas, it's not possible (trains, buses, other transport prohibitively expensive & time-wise, too long...) BUT I would highly recommend Ely as a lovely place to go for the day! Enjoy the beautiful Cathedral & the house where Oliver Cromwell lived... The Fens are amazing!
