Imperial War Museum

Come along on Sunday 27th July for a visit to the newly refurbished Imperial War Museum!

About the museum

The museum reopens on the 19th July after a £25m refurbishment, which includes new WW1 galleries telling the story of the war.  The reopening coincides with the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of WW1 on 28th July.

The museum has occupied the former Bethlem Royal Hospital site since 1936. It holds over 11 million items relating to wars fought in by Britain and the commonwealth over the last 100 years. The museum also has seperate exhibitions on the holocaust, a family in war, the secret war (about spies & codebreaking) and paintings of war.

There is a lot to see in the museum, so expect to spend at least two hours looking around.  We will divide into small groups when you arrive, to go round the museum together.

Entry is free!

Afterwards we will head to a local pub for a drink.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Look out for the group sign -

Hope to see you there!

Agree with all you say Gil, to compare the fate of the Jews and others with the general occupation of France is outrageous. It could also be added that without the overbearing arrogance of the French leadership (along with their British counterparts) at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles there probably would not have been a WWII.

This conversation is really plummeting!!! I thought it was finished!!!

FYI a footnote is a note placed at the bottom of a page of a book or manuscript that comments on or cites a reference for a designated part of the text.

Reality sometimes trumps good intentions and I got to see little more than the Holocaust Gallery...horrific, but a "must see". ...a warning for us still today, unfortunately. Not about military history, but a lot about humanity and corruption of logic.

@Gareth, thank you for mentioning the White Rose. The film Sophie Scholl - The Final Days is an incredibly moving film. You have probably seen it. If not, you really should.

Thank you Gareth to recall the White Rose.

So much to see, focused on the Holocaust and the new World War I areas, both were really good.

    Must definitely go again.

Thanks Mythili to comment so well the Lord Ashcroft Gallery. I'm still haunted today by all of these remarkable people's acts of bravery.

Valerie, Kim and I started at the top floor to wind our way down to when the WWI gallery would be free to access. Even the top floor with it's heart-breaking stories of bravery and heroism were enough to make one ponder deeply on the loyalty, sacrifice and sense of duty to one's fellow soldiers, officers and country, that led to such acts of selfless heroism.

Everyone of those in the gallery deserved the Victoria Cross/ George Cross and we should not forget the hundreds whose stories were not represented or may remain unknown. Meeting the enemy army face to face required great bravery. It was the age of men on foot and horseback, the horses too, trained to resist sudden movements when shells and bombs exploded and bullets whizzed around them deserve our respect

Nice outing! Sorry I left before the group adjourned to the pub - had to catch end of le Tour de France so will go to visit WW1 galleries another day. Hope the photos give a flavour of the revamped museum.

Too much, too little time. So very interesting, Gareth's initial comment about there being so much was so true. It was very enjoyable to meet Valerie, Denis, Gareth, Kim and all the others I spoke to. Valerie apologies for abandoning ship, but I went down to level 4 accompanying the gentleman with me and got lost. I didn't see anyone from the group again among the hundreds of visitors, or maybe couldn't see anyone among the crowds!

Had to cry off after 3 hours and limp my way home...!
    Bravo Robert!!

I have been keen on military history for many years. Ironically, given the main focus of today's visit, WW1 is not a conflict I have much knowledge or interest in!!!

    July 27, 2014

  • Debbie

Two friends want to join me, they are visitors from Australia. Hope that is OK?

    July 27, 2014

Sorry I'm having to bail out. Study commitments and work have encroached onto my Sunday despite my efforts. Hope you have a good time and I'll endeavour to get out again soon to share some culture with new people.

If there are any other people that are military history fans, I'd say that we should stick together. It's always better if you can discuss on semi-professional level. :)

    July 22, 2014

    • GARETH

I have not been to this one before, but I intend to stick just to WW1 galleries as there is usually too much to see in one visit to museums such as this.

      July 24, 2014

    • Gil

Hi, I would say that most of the people coming to this are military history fans...

Sorry won't be able to make it tomorrow

    July 26, 2014

Radio 4 just reviewed it - mixed views and they suggested people may have to queue as entry is free. As for the military history fans, I hope they will feel sufficiently inclusive to engage with the rest of us!

I hope to be able to come to the War Museum tomorrow although short notice. I am having my roof fixed so not sure how long it will take. I will call.
