Come along on Sunday 17th August at 1:45pm for a guided walk on Shakespeare and the London he lived in.

About the walk
William Shakespeare (born 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon) came to London in around 1592 and stayed until 1613. He wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets and 2 long narrative poems before retiring back to Stratford.

Today he is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. He is the most quoted writer in the history of the English speaking world and many of his quotations have passed into everyday usage. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

But, we know so very little about him and his life. There is not a confirmed drawing or painting of him created during his lifetime or even a confirmed description of what he looked like. There are also quite a lot of mysteries and unanswered questions surrounding his life, which we are unlikely to ever find the answers to.

Thanks to the Great Fire of 1666, World War II bombing and a clear out of the slums in London during the 1920’s and 30’s, there is very little that remains of Shakespeare’s London, but there are some things!

During the walk I will tell you about him and how he changed the English language, his friends, contemporaries, his influences and what life in London was like in the late Elizabethan period. We will be covering the period 1542 to 1623.

The guided walk will be led by myself. Full Member’s 2014 will be free, everyone else the walk will be £5 each (payable on the day).

The walk takes about 2 hours and finishes near St Paul's. We will head to the Lord Raglan pub, 61 St Martin's-le-Grand after the walk.

Lookout for the group sign and the place where we are meeting below - across the road from the Tooley Street exit (when you get off the tube, head for 'London Bridge Station' and then come out the Tooley Street exit and cross the road).

Hope to see you there!
