Running through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed.

Come along on Thursday 22nd January to explore 10,000 years of London’s dynamic history...

About the foreshore
Guided by Nathalie Cohen, an archaeologist from the Museum of London's Thames Discovery Programme, we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide at Custom House, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in.

Nathalie will tell us more about the Foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide or by kicking back a few stones with your feet.

You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older (examples of some items found below).

Everyone will find at least 20 items each and everything you find you can keep!

The foreshore is very stoney, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots).

Cost is £8 per person for Full Members, everyone else £9 per person (payable on the day). Plastic gloves will be provided.

We will be finished by about 11am.

Afterwards we will head Starbucks coffee shop nearby for a hot drink and a chat.

If you can't see us in Trinity Gardens next to the station, please call or text.

Please note, we only wait at the meeting point for 10 minutes after the advertised meeting time, so please be on time or early.

Look out for the group sign -

Hope to see you there!
