Come along on Saturday 17th December for a Blue Badge Guided Walk around the Barbican.
We have 2 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP. If you've never attended before, both the guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it might default to 2:00pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).
About the walk & the area
The definition of the word Barbican, is of an outer defence of a castle or walled city, especially a double tower above a gate or drawbridge. In this case there seems to have been a Roman specula or watchtower here in front of a Roman fort. The Barbican Estate which covers a lot of the Barbican today is a residential estate built during the 1960s and 1970s after the area was devastated by World War II bombing.
At first glance the Barbican might seem like a concrete jungle but there are some real hidden gems in this area. Two historic burial grounds, the centre of World Methodism, the site of an Elizabethan theatre, a thriving weekday lunchtime market which is a foodie paradise, an 18th century brewery, model social housing and one of London’s leading drama schools feature on this tour.
Of course we won’t forget the famous Barbican Arts Centre, home to the best in music, film, art and international theatre.
The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 2 groups and we will be guided by Diane Burstein (2:00pm) & Rachel Kolsky (2:15pm).
It will last about 2 hours.
Cost for the guided walk is £7 per person for Full Members of the group and £9 per person for non-Full Members (payable on the day).
Click here to become a Full Member.
Afterwards we will head to the Jugged Hare Pub, 49 Chiswell Street for a chat over a drink.
Please note, we only wait outside the station for 10 minutes after the advertised meeting time, so please be early or on time.
If you can't see us outside the station, please text.
Look out for the group sign:
Hope to see you there!
