Come along on Sunday 10th November to visit West Norwood Cemetery!

About the cemetery
Dating from 1837, the cemetery is one of the "Magnificent Seven" Gothic Revival style of cemeteries of London with its grounds being a mixture of historic monumental cemetery, modern lawn cemetery and catacombs.

Reckoned to hold the finest collection of sepulchral monuments in London, it features 69 Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings and structures, including a dedicated Greek Orthodox necropolis with 19 listed mausoleums and monuments.

The cemetery holds the graves of a large number of famous people, including:

Sir Hiram Maxim, inventor of the automatic machine gun
James Henry Greathead, who tunnelled much of the London Underground
Dr William Marsden, founder of the Royal Free Hospital and The Royal Marsden Hospital
Sister Eliza Roberts, Florence Nightingale principal nurse during the Crimean War
C. W. Alcock, founder of Test cricket and the FA Cup
Sir Henry Tate, sugar magnate and founder of London's Tate Gallery
Paul Julius Baron von Reuter, founder of Reuters news agency
Isabella Beeton, the famous cookery writer

The visit should last about 2 hours. The visit is self guiding.

Entry cost is free, the group doesn't charge Meetup fees.

Afterwards we will head to the 'Great North Wood' pub, 3 Knight's Hill, a short walk from the cemetery from 4pm for a chat over a drink.

If you can, please come to the pub afterwards, as its a great way to meet others after the visit.
