Thanks for this Mags,

I’d highly recommend firstly coming along to the unparty and secondly getting involved and helping out on the night if you can. There are so many reasons to get involved - it’s a great way to boost your profile a bit and get a layer down within the LJC, you will meet a few of the organisers and have a lot of fun. Employers in London are always looking for developers that are actively involved in the tech community, sure it’s one thing to sign up to the group or get along to a few events but if you can tell your prospective or current employers that you actively help out your community then it can help raise your profile. It shows a genuine level of care about your interest and gives you a chance to share the love about your current employers with a wider network, and this always goes down well with employers who are looking for new ways to let people know how great they are. Of course it can also be fun to help out your community just because it is *your* community and it feels good to give something back. So no matter what your motives are, whether it’s altruistic, self development or career based, there are a lot of reasons to get involved.

I have personally watched a great many developer’s careers escalate rapidly from getting involved in community work, the unparty provides perhaps the lowest barrier for entry to get involved and start doing something - if you’re interested in getting involved then email, tweet, call or send a carrier pigeon to Maggie who will let you know what more is needed… good luck!

@Maggie - it may be a nice idea to highlight anyone that has helped out on the event page.

If anyone else has any stories about how their career has developed from engaging with the LJC or another tech community then please do feel free to share, it may well inspire a few people that are on the edge to get involved.

Cheers,
Barry

Hi guys,

I hope you’ve seen the meetup announcement for the LJC Summer Unparty.  http://www.meetup.com/Londonjavacommunity/events/231940471/  There are plenty of places available just now but they will fill up soon, so if you are available on 12 July please do sign up to as soon as you can.

If you haven’t been to an Unparty before, I really recommend getting along to this one. The LJC is based on two key benefits to members

- learning more about tech through talks and events

- building your network of like-minded people through getting together at meetups.

The Unparty is a great way to meet fellow members – all people who share an enthusiasm for tech in the Java ecosystem – in an environment that isn’t a formal tech talk. You are guaranteed a warm welcome!

I’m extending a very warm invitation to anyone wanting to get a bit more involved in the community to help out on the evening. The basic plan was sketched out at our open meeting in May, but there are one or two things the organisers would welcome some help with. Just drop me an email directly if you’d like to know more.

Many thanks,

Maggie
