The Chiditarod! Pub Crawl / Food Drive / Craziness

The what?

The Chiditarod. (<<-- That's a link; click on it.)

It's like the Iditarod. You know: that annual marathon dog sled race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, with Siberian huskies and mushers and whatnot? But this one takes place in Chicago and also features these other significant differentiators:

1) Instead of sleds, the vehicle of choice is the urban shopping cart.

2) Instead of Siberian huskies, what's pulling the shopping carts are human people.

3) Instead of wearing arctic-weather-protective gear, teams dress up in wacky costumes and decorate their carts.

4) Instead of racing for valuable cash prizes, Chiditarod teams collect food donations for the community. It's a food drive.

5) Instead of stopping at resupply checkpoints, Chiditarod teams stop at bars.

And that's where we come in.

Let's watch and support the Chiditarod by doing a mini Saturday pub crawl at some of the race's checkpoints. While the actual route won't be released until race day, the checkpoints have been listed and include the following Wicker Park bars (at least the ones in close proximity to each other):

Phyllis’s Musical Inn: 1800 W Division (**cash only!!!**)

Nicks’ Beer Garden: 1516 N. Milwaukee

Emporium Barcade: 1366 N. Milwaukee

That's three bars along a 7-block route. Totally doable. After the race is over? We'll figure something out. One possibility is to head to the Dolphin Lounge (2200 N. Ashland) for the Chiditarod's after-party.

***The Chicago Loop Happy Hour group is supporting this so you must bring a food donation. Canned goods, non-perishables, you know the routine. Specific needs are: beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cereal, chili, jelly, macaroni and cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, rice, shelf-stable milk, soup, stew, and tuna.***

More details to follow as race day gets closer..... We may do a Hangover Brunch With Grace event and follow with the pub crawl. Plans are still in the works.

Cheers!
