The Reformation: 500 Year Anniversary
Happy New Year everyone! Let's kick off our first new year meet up with the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation. What was the Protestant Reformation (as it is commonly referred to in European Historiography). How did the Reformation (which lasted until the mid 17th century and concluded with the Peace of Westphalia) influence the course of development of the European continent from 16th century and beyond? How did it alter religious and social norms of Europeans? What reaction did it create from the Catholic church and Catholic monarchs across Europe? What impact did the Reformation movement leave on European (and World) art and culture? Were there economic consequences for European states that embraced the religious doctrine of Protestant founding fathers (Luther, Knox, Zwingli, Hus, Wycliffe, etc.,). Also, was the Reformation a natural, evolutionary process of the general Renaissance movement that occurred in Europe almost two centuries before the birth of Martin Luther or was it a religious and cultural revolution whose objective it was to fundamentally transform the European continent.
