Canada by Richard Ford

Summary: When fifteen-year-old Dell Parsons' parents rob a bank, his sense of a happy, knowable life is forever shattered. A family friend spirits Dell across the Canadian border, in hopes of delivering him to a better life. There, Dell is taken in by Arthur Remlinger, an enigmatic American whose suave reserve masks a violent nature. Undone by the calamity of his parents' arrest, Dell struggles under the vast prairie sky to remake himself and define the adults he thought he knew and loved. But his search for grace and peace only moves him nearer to a harrowing and murderous collision with Remlinger.

A masterwork of haunting and spectacular vision from one of our greatest writers, Canada is a profound novel of boundaries traversed, innocence lost and reconciled, and the mysterious and consoling bonds of family. Told in spare elegant prose, resonant and luminous, it is destined to become a classic.

Since this will be a potluck, if you're planning to attend, please let us know what kind of food you plan to bring (side or main dish, salad, bread, dessert, etc.) in your RSVP. I'll send you the address about a week before the meeting. Also, please feel free to bring books you no longer need for a book exchange.

Note: if you sign up and don't get an email with the location and details within the week before, please let me know at [masked]. I don't have your contact information unless you give it to me.

As usual, great discussion and food. My husband came home and read Waiting for the Barbarians last night. Another member?? Thanks for welcoming him on short notice so I could attend.

Elaine...please let me know about where you are, or where we are meeting, so I can evaluate if I can get there in time. From the map it appears to be somewhere in Northridge. Is that correct?

Hi Ellen, The location is in Westwood, South of Wilshire.

Thanks, Henry! Ellen, we don't post the exact address because it's a private residence. But I'll be sending everyone an email with that information this coming weekend. Hope you can join us!

Question for all: I'm working on a business that, among other things, provides a nice, comfortable, creative environment that writers/readers and other artists can go to, to work. I wanted to get more insight into what people, like yourselves would like in a place like this to make it more unique than other places that are similar. Certain food? Temporary housing for struggling artists? Workshops? Lectures? Help finding representation? Certain products you'd like to buy and/or use for free that you have trouble finding on your own? Beanbag chairs? A bar? I'd love any suggestions, no matter how outlandish you think it may be. I really appreciate any thoughts, thanks!
