Abstract

Vowpal Wabbit Tutorial

This is a tutorial on using Vowpal Wabbit (http://hunch.net/~vw), a very fast and efficient learning algorithm. In various configurations, I've made the wabbit effectively learn at up to 200 megafeatures/second.  Here I only count nonzero features, and that number is for sustained throughput on a dataset which does not fit in RAM.  This tutorial will cover all the basic features of VW, including online learning, learning with adaptive features, and via conjugate gradient.  The tutorial will include various demos, and I'm hoping to make things as interactive as possible.  Please come with questions.

John as always mixed in some old stuff and some new stuff. Some of the discussion was on some early stage reporting on work he was doing, the kind of stuff you don't hear about anywhere else. Really great experience!

Tremendous meeting. Thank you so much to eHarmony for setting it up and hosting us. John Langford is an amazingly smart guy and yet surprisingly easygoing and accessible. He really has an intuitive grasp of complicated ML concepts and manages to explain them clearly, despite the enormous complexity and subtlety of his work. Really enjoyed his presentations and the day as a whole.

I would like to add, also, that I appreciated having "breaks" during which to talk to not only John but also other LAML members. Had some enlightening and productive conversations. Let's make sure we add more space for conversations to future meetings.

Vw is pretty self contained. In my experience if you manage to compile it then it works. I ended up using way more on ubuntu than on a mac.

I'm referring more to stability. With some of these things, certain important functionalities don't work on certain OSes, or the interface is broken etc.

Hey Ryan, define better ;-) I used it on both. Predictive performance should be the same. Speed depends on HW.

Does VW work better under Ubuntu than Mac?

So I'm gonna bring my laptop with vowpal installed so I can work during the tutorial!

Hey V: my boss Randall is definitely coming for lunch and afternoon talks. He will likely skip the Vowpal tutorial.

Please note this turned out to be a All Day happening. We will be starting earlier with a vw tutorial and continue after lunch with two more talks.
