Conrad Steenberg presents Crack & Jason Sirota presents The Knot

  • Jul 18, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Conrad Steenberg presents the Crack language and Jason Sirota presents The Knot: Rethinking site search and data using MongoDB and Solr

We have invited Conrad Steenberg from Crack and Jason Sirota from The Knot to speak to us. Followed by a healthy Q & A.

  • 7:00 pm: meet, greet & eat
  • 7:30 pm: main presentation
  • Q&A after the talk

Crack is a statically typed language with a C-like taking inspiration from C/C++, Java, C# as well as Python Ruby and others. It is designed to be convenient to use as a scripting language while at the same time having the speed and expressive power of a compiled multi-paradigm language. It is built on the foundation of the LLVM compiler project and benefits from its improving compiler optimization performance. This talk will introduce the language from a user perspective in developing web applications.

The Knot evolved as a jumble of different databases and subsystems, see how The Knot took that disparate architecture and implemented a realtime messaging platform for site-wide search and core data in MongoDB and Solr using Amazon Web Services EC2 and Elastic Beanstalk.

Conrad Steenberg grew up in South Africa in the roaring 80s, started playing with BASIC and Z80 machine code, publishing programs in the SA Computing magazine. After high school he earned a degree in Physics and Applied Math, followed by a masters and PhD in Physics doing numerical analysis of cosmic rays in the heliosphere.

After moving to US in 1998 for a 2 year postdoc as part of the Voyager program at Caltech, he joined the High Energy Physics department to work on data analysis in the CMS experiment, part of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The Caltech HEP group broke several consecutive internet land speed records in preparation of the big data deluge produced by the detector. In 2007 he moved the the Caltech department of bio-engineering where he is currently a software engineer for the DNA/RNA design and analysis package NUPACK.

I appreciated the presentation, a lot of good information. Also, I'm looking for someone who is good with MongoDB (or FireBase) that is interested in doing a side project (evenings and/or weekends). Let me know if you or someone you know would be interested. [masked]
