• LABOR DAY: SEQUOIA + Kings Canyon National Parks! A great "First" CAMPING Trip!

SEQUOIA & KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS Long Labor Day Weekend Trip / 3 nights Giant trees. Camping. Waterfalls. We're going to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks for the long holiday weekend. Hiking. Camping. Hanging out. Have you even driven through a tree? Sequoia is famous for it's giant trees, including the largest tree in the universe --called the "General Sherman." (You know if a tree has a name, it's special!) And yes there is even have a tree you can drive through! Our campground is in a great location so we can hit both Sequoia and Kings Canyon Parks, and it's a shorter drive than other parks-- only 4 1/2+ hours away -- so you can leave after work and arrive not too late. ## RSVP INFO BELOW ## Read all info before signing up! GOING ALONE? Don't know anyone on the trip? Don't worry, So's almost everyone else. It's a great welcoming environment, with a cool group of people, and it's a good way make new friends. LEARN TO CAMP! If you've never camped before, this would be a great intro for you: This trip is a little more relaxed, hikes a little easier and the weather will be warm, so you won't need a giant sleeping bag. THE PLAN: We'll hike. Hit a waterfall or two -- maybe go swimming. We've been to Sequoia the last two years; so we're going to revisit some of the best places, but I like to do new stuff too. We'll see the giant trees. We'll hike down a canyon to a really cool waterfall. This time I want to check out an awesome looking cave drawing/petrograph and everyone likes a good granite dome hike -- right? There's also a chill meadow hike that gives us a great vantage point of Kings Canyon. There's a really cool cave in the park -- do you want to take a tour? And I like to plan hikes to take advantage of the best time of day, whether its for temperature or the best light for photos. So we usually end up on top of something for great sunset views...and one of those somethings will be the top of Moro Rock. CAMPFIRE TIME + HANGING OUT: This trip will be a good mix: We're doing cool hikes in the day but when night falls, we'll eat and drink, and hang around the campfire, maybe play some games, tell stories, and get to know each other. For some, this is their favorite part of these trips. IS CAMPING HARD? WHAT DO I NEED? No. This is car-camping -- it's civilized! There are bathrooms and running water. I bring 3 gas stoves and kitchen utensils/pots/pans for cooking. You should have basic gear for car camping: sleeping bag/blanket, pad/mattress/yoga mat, flashlight, the right clothes and shoes, etc. You don't need expensive REI gear. (Cheap WalMart stuff is good enough.) And if you don't have a tent -- don't worry -- there's always enough tent space for everyone. You supply your own food. Drinking cups, plates and utensils will be supplied. RSVP INSTRUCTIONS: If you want to go - RSVP Yes. (Don't forget to give me your email address.) After you RSVP I email you a SURVEY w/questions. Answer them. And you won't officially be on the trip until youre confirmed and pay. (Event is crossposted on different Meetup groups so the RSVP's you see here show you an incomplete picture of who is going.) Most attendees on past trips are in age range 25-40. Cost for the 3-night trip is $95 per person. GETTING THERE / WEATHER Depending on where in L.A. you are, it's a 4+ hour drive. Carpooling is required - you coordinate your carpool thru a carpool tool I supply. You split gas cost and you also split the $30 park entrance fees (though a lot of people have the Parks Pass, which makes the entrance free.) Weather should be perfect: highs in the low 80's and no rain (of course). This is not a hardcore trip, but please be in good shape with some hiking experience. Mountains. Giant trees. Waterfalls. You got anything better planned for Labor Day? We were at Sequoia for Labor Day last year and have done recent trips to Zion and Yosemite -- its always a great time. Come join us! And as always, no dogs, no kids and no bad attitudes.

  • DIY Kokedama (send a message to confirm RSVP!)

    Allendale Park

Bring some warmth to your home or office with a unique plant called Kokedama! These odd plants are a Japanese term that translates as “ball of moss". A piece of twine can also be affixed to your plant, allowing you to hang these living conversation pieces in a window or other well lit area of your home. Makes a great gift and it can be grown indoor or outdoors!
